Workstation – tailored computers Velocity Micro


A workstation PC is a computer designed to perform professional tasks. Unlike standard computers, workstations typically have specialized components that are optimized to perform difficult computational or graphical tasks, such as professional plotting, video editing, VFX, or scientific calculations.

Used for work computers

Workstation computers are usually built for very specific purposes, and their internal components will reflect this. Workflows such as designing, drawing, or creating content using software such as AutoCAD, Lumion, Adobe Premiere, or Revit usually benefit from a real workstation over a home desktop.

Unlike standard desktops, workstations typically support ECC RAM (debugging) RAM, have advanced storage capabilities like NAS drives, use professional-quality graphics like Quadro and Radeon Pro, have pro-grade motherboards, and have cooling capacity for thermal management of these types of components.

Product support and warranties are also much more robust, which is a major factor in increasing the cost of these components. As a replacement, these industrial parts can and usually last longer.

Large CPU and GPU manufacturers offer product lines specifically tailored to workstation tasks.

Workstation CPU lines

Intel: Xeon & X series-Intel multi-core solutions have a maximum of about 38 total cores for a single socket, but can be close to three-digit total cores for dual processor configuration. Learn more about the difference between Xeona and i7 here.

AMD: Threadripper / Threadripper PRO – With a total of 64 cores on a single port, AMD Threadripper is the most robust workstation solution for CPU intensive workloads.

Workstation GPU lines

Nvidia: Quadro – NVIDIA’s professional solution has the most market share, with professional graphics supporting up to 48 GB of vRAM each. Our recommendation for the most demanding tasks

AMD: The Radeon Pro – AMD Pro product line also offers some key benefits, especially if paired with an AMD processor.

Types of workstation computers

Graphic production: These computers are designed to produce 2D / 3D images and animations and create these creations for presentation. The GPU does the hard work during the plotting process, but the processor speed / number of cores should not be neglected as they will also withstand part of the load.

Servers: Multi-core CPU-based systems, designed in many cases to run indefinitely and solve complex computational tasks, manage many users, store large amounts of data, or plot.

Multimedia: The CPU and GPU typically work together in multimedia or production systems to encode, edit, and produce professional audio / video. The more complex the media (more layers, effects, etc.), the more hardware-intensive it is.

Modeling: Modeling software like AutoCAD requires professional graphics cards to produce precise professional models. This is typically CPU-based with an emphasis on single-threaded performance.
