Wyze Labs on Tuesday launched a new level of pay-as-you-go subscription for its Cam Plus Lite line of home security cameras. And the company praises the fact that you can’t pay anything if you want to.

Wyze said it also plans to remove the 32GB microSD card size limit for its cameras and add new rewind and skip buttons to make it easier to view recordings saved locally.

Wyze Cam Plus Lite subscription level

In a post on the Wyze forum, the company said you pay nothing if you want the Cam Plus Lite subscription level includes face detection (as opposed to simple motion detection) and cloud imagery for no longer than 12 seconds with a 5-minute cooling period in between.

Paying as much as you want is not new to Wyze. He first tested a model with face detection in 2020 and found that some people would pay to allow the level to cost nothing for others.

Wyze’s recent experiment with face detection pricing followed after it was included for free starting in 2019. But then Wyze had to remove it completely after Apple bought the involved technology company AI and terminated the licensing agreement.

What do other companies do?

Other smart home companies have differing views on how much to charge for person detection. The ring and the Arlo charge for similar characteristics. Google and Eufy offer them for free. For Wyze, the free option fits in with the company’s reputation for accessibility.

Wyze cameras: other levels of subscription

Other Wyze subscription levels for its cameras cost slightly more than Cam Plus Lite. Cam Plus costs $ 1.99 per camera per month with no length limit of 12 seconds or 5 minutes for cloud imagery. It also has a wider detection (movement, person, packages, pets and vehicles). The Cam Plus Pro costs $ 3.99 per camera per month. It contains constant professional monitoring and face recognition.

The new subscription level to Cam Plus Lite will apply to Wyze Cam v2 and v3, Wyze Cam Pan v1 and v2 and Wyze Cam Outdoor. Previously, pay-what-you only covered Wyze Cam v2 and Wyze Cam Pan v1.

In addition, Cam Plus Lite support for Wyze video doorbells is coming soon, the company notes.
