When to expect M1X MacBook pros will become available to order

Apple announced today that it will hold a virtual event on Monday, October 18 at 10 a.m. Pacific time, and rumors suggest that the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will be introduced with a faster version of the M1 chip.

After the event was announced, several readers asked us when to expect orders to start for the new MacBook Pro models, if they are announced.

While nothing is certain until Apple says so, almost all new Macs announced at the Apple event in the last five years are available for ordering on the same day of the event. The only exception was the 24-inch iMac earlier this year.

We left the iMac Pro and the latest Mac Pro off the list because these machines were reviewed during WWDC’s introductory words many months before they were ready to launch.

  • 2016: The first MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar were announced at the Apple event on Thursday, October 27, 2016, and became available for ordering the same day. Deliveries began in 2-3 weeks, and customers began receiving orders around Monday, November 14th.
  • 2017: The new MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac models were announced at the WWDC on Monday, June 5, 2017. All new Macs became available for same-day ordering and began arriving on Wednesday, June 7.
  • 2018: The new MacBook Air and Mac mini models were announced at the Apple event on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. Both new Macs became available for order on the same day, and customers began arriving on Wednesday, November 7.
  • 2020: The first Macs with the M1 chip, including the MacBook Air, the 13-inch lower-end MacBook Pro and the lower Mac mini, were announced at Apple’s event on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. All new Macs became available to order the same day and begin arrive to customers on Tuesday, November 17th.
  • 2021: The colorful new 24-inch iMac with the M1 chip was announced at the Apple event on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, and became available for ordering on Friday, April 30. The new iMac began arriving to users on Friday, May 21st.

New Macs released with a press release in the Apple Newsroom also typically become available for same-day ordering, including the 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2019 and the latest 27-inch iMac in August 2020.

Although the 24-inch iMac has broken the trend of one-day orders for new Macs, probably due to supply chain problems linked to the pandemic, it remains to be seen whether the new MacBook Pro models will follow the delay in ordering. At the very least, customers interested in the M1X MacBook Pro probably won’t have to set an alarm on Friday morning like for the iPhone.
