Users are spending $ 133 billion on mobile apps in 2021

The market for mobile applications is growing every year, and the numbers clearly show that. A new Sensor Tower study released on Tuesday found that users will spend $ 133 billion on apps in 2021, up 20% from 2020. Interestingly, Apple’s App Store continues to generate more revenue than Google Play.

Sensor Tower research (via TechCrunch) includes data from the App Store and Google Play. Overall, Apple’s App Store alone makes $ 85.1 billion in this market, up 17.7% from a year earlier. While Android dominates market share, users spent less on the Google Play Store than on the App Store. During the year, Google Play registered $ 47.9 billion in revenue.

Following the adoption and spending boom for both mobile games and non-gaming apps in 2020, market trends began to normalize in 2021 as consumer spending is projected to reach approximately $ 133 billion on in-app purchases, premium apps and subscriptions in the App Store. and Google Play, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence. This represents a 19.7 percent increase over the previous year from $ 111.1 billion in 2020, almost reflecting a 21 percent year-on-year increase in consumer spending in 2019.

The research states that the growth is the result of the normalization of the market after last year’s influences of COVID-19, so it is possible to imagine that the results will be even better in 2022.

Not surprisingly, the TikTok app is the highest-grossing app of the year as the video platform reached $ 3 billion in revenue in June. Other apps that launched the mobile app market in 2021 were YouTube, Tinder and Disney +. Apps like Tencent Video, iQIYI, Piccoma, QQ Music and Youku are also among the highest-earning apps in Apple’s App Store.

When it comes to download numbers, TikTok remains number one on the list. However, right behind that comes YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Zoom.

Sensor Tower has even released a ranking dedicated to games. Players are expected to spend $ 52.3 billion on the App Store alone by the end of the year. On iOS, the most downloaded game in 2021 was PUBG Mobile, while Honor of Kings led the way in revenue for this year.

More details about the research can be found on the Sensor Tower website.
