Updating Apple Maps lets you explore 3D cities

With the biggest Apple Maps update for iOS 15 to date, technology giant Cupertino said users in several major cities can experience a 3D view with rich detail, improved navigation, stunning walking directions and more.

The update is expanding to a new map Apple said it has been building for years. Now available in London, Los Angeles, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area, 3D mapping will appear this year and next in other cities.

Later this year, 3D mapping is coming to the iPhone in Philadelphia, San Diego and Washington, Apple said. Support for additional cities, including Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, is developing next year.

The new city experience offers rich details, driving routes with better navigation, extensive walking instructions displayed in augmented reality and much more.

“Maps are the best way to navigate the world: they are easy to use, beautifully designed and built with privacy at its core. With this update, we push Maps even further, providing users with more ways to discover the natural beauty of the world and explore cities through a new 3D view, ”said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services. “Our goal has always been to build the best and most accurate map in the world. Upgrades to Apple Maps are a continuation of that effort. ”

Explore cities with detailed maps

Apple Maps introduces a new way to navigate cities with a 3D map that offers details for neighborhoods, commercial neighborhoods, marinas, buildings and other places.

Users can see details of the city’s altitude, new road markings and hundreds of custom landmarks. Currently it includes the Coit Tower in San Francisco, Dodger Stadium in LA, the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. There will be more soon. And the night mode with the moonlight is activated at dusk.

Maps now contain more road details to help drivers navigate cities more easily and safely.

Turning lanes, middle lanes, bus and taxi lanes and pedestrian crossings are clearly displayed to help drivers navigate traffic intersections. Highways with complex overlapping nodes are shown in 3D at road level, which facilitates insight into upcoming traffic conditions. Route planning predicts the estimated time of arrival for future departures based on expected traffic.

The new navigation will arrive at CarPlay later this year, Apple said.

The maps offer improvements for public transport drivers. Nearby stations are visible at the top of the screen. Users can pin their favorite lines to Maps, so the best route is just one touch away.

And when the user selects a transit route, Maps will automatically notify them when it is time to disembark as they approach their final destination. Riders can even follow on the Apple Watch.

These updates are upgraded to public transport features already available on Maps. For example, real-time transit provides detailed transit schedules, live departure time, arrival time, current bus or train location on the route, and system connections. Folders also contain important real-time information, such as interruptions.

With iOS 15, Apple Maps introduces step-by-step instructions for walking in augmented reality. Users can easily pick up their iPhone to scan buildings in the area, and Maps generates a very precise position to deliver detailed instructions that can be seen in real-world context.

In iOS 15 users can tap Explore guides button in Access Maps for more than a thousand expert guides that include brand recommendations such as Time’s up,, Washington Post, National Park Foundation, Complex, i In love.

Users can save Guides. They are automatically updated when new places are added, so users always have the latest recommendations. Users can even create their own personal guides about favorite places to share with friends and family.

Users can see vivid details in mountain ranges, deserts, rainforests, oceans and more. You can now explore even the most remote and precious locations on the planet with your iPhone, Apple said.
