TikTok shares the best songs and music trends on the platform in 2021

Music plays a key role on TikTok, and today the platform shared a new list of the best songs and performers on the platform throughout the year, including regional insights, genre trends, the most popular artists by category and more.

As TikTok explains:

After turning its heads in 2020, TikTok continued its huge growth to become the dominant force in the music and music industry in 2021. Approximately 430 songs exceeded 1 billion video views of TikTok 2021 sounds – a triple increase compared to 2020. The stunning view of TikTok does not exist in a vacuum, but is directly turning into a commercial success of popular songs and artists. Over 175 songs which was on trend at TikTok in 2021, was on the Billboard Hot 100 list, twice as many as last year.

Indeed, TikTok is now so influential that various artists and publishers create songs with TikTok in mind, and some even change the names of their songs in retrospect to better match the usage in the app. According to a recent study by MRC data, 75% of TikTok users in the US use the app to discover new artists, while 63% say they are hearing music for the first time that they have never heard through TikTok clips before.

And with TickTook planned to reach 1.5 billion users in 2022, it looks like that impact will only increase, giving even more weight to this review of key music trends.

Probably the most popular example in this case would be Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’, which was first released in 1977, but re-entered the Billboard charts last year amid a viral TickTok clip. This revival highlights TikTok’s potential for the music industry and it’s no surprise to see publishers focus more on the channel as a means of maximizing sales opportunities.
