Today we announce the current availability of the ProMagix HD150, our first AMD Threadripper PRO workstation. In the last few years, no one has built more Threadripper workstations than us and we are excited to expand that product line with new PRO processors and WRX80 chipset motherboards. You can check out our full press release here with quotes from AMD and Asus, but read on to find out more about this amazing new workstation platform, how it differs and who it is best suited for.
What are the benefits of Threadripper PRO?
Like the TRX40 version of the Threadripper, the WRX80 PRO version is primarily a workstation platform, designed for high-threaded applications such as fluid dynamics in computing, professional video editing, or visual effects. Both have up to 64 cores and 128 threads of processing power, but there are some key benefits that PRO versions offer:
- Higher memory throughput and memory density – PRO supports up to 2TB of total RAM compared to 256 GB with the standard version and full support for ECC RAM.
- 128 PCIe Gen4 tape – Doubling the maximum number of PCIe lanes from 64 to 128 in the future confirms your workstation for expansion capabilities on the go
- AMD PRO technologies – Threadripper PRO also comes with the same encryption and deployment features as the previously released Ryzen PRO processors, to make the HD150 as secure and powerful as possible. To learn more about these features, click here.
Who is Threadripper PRO for?
The case of using a PRO workstation is quite large, but basically anyone who needs a system for use in a business environment where PRO technologies are affordable or need 256 GB + RAM will see the benefits. This includes verticals such as architecture, oil / gas, machine learning, VFX, scientific research, simulations and many more. Cinebench is a CPU-intensive benchmark designed to take advantage of multi-threaded processors. We’re still working on a complete set of test data to really show the performance benefits this platform offers, but those results should give you an idea.
In this screenshot, you’ll see that the 32-core PRO 3975W outperforms the second-generation Threadripper by 35% and almost doubles the results of the Intel i9-10980X — and it’s just a mid-range option from this set of products! For multi-thread workflows, this type of performance advantage is simply an absolute boon to productivity.
