The new MacBook Pro has proven to be surprisingly good at gaming

Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max processors in the new MacBook Pro offer powerful graphics performance. It is intended for artists who render video and other professional tasks, but tests show that it turns into excellent performance in games.

Of course, that doesn’t fix the lack of top-notch games for the Mac.

The 2021 MacBook Pro delivers superb frame rate when playing games

PCMag tested gaming on a 14-inch MacBook Pro running an M1 Pro processor with a 16-core GPU and a 16-inch model running an M1 Max with a 32-core GPU. He compared them to the Razer Blade 15 Advanced with a Core i7 processor with a GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, which he described as “the most advanced high-end Windows gaming laptop”.

When testing Rise of the Tomb Raider with very high graphics detail, the M1 Max managed to generate an average of 116 frames per second, compared to 114 fps on the Core i7. The M1 Pro average was 79 fps, but it’s still above 60 fps.

He Hitman, The M1 Max averaged 106 fps, the M1 Pro averaged 104 fps, and the Core i7 averaged 103 fps.

The tests included a few more games and Apple chips didn’t always win. The Core i7 was solidly ahead Shadow of the Tomb Raider, for example.

PCMagTom Brant summed up the results with, ‘The answer to the question of whether the M1 Pro and M1 Max are good to play is:’ It depends on the game. ‘ It’s a significant triumph for Mac silicone, as it’s essentially the same answer to the question of whether Nvidia or the AMD GPU in a Windows gaming laptop is good for gaming. ”

Note that these tests were focused on the processor, not the screen, buttons, or trackpad in the 2021 MacBook Pro.

Mac playing elephant in the room

PCMag tested the games he did mostly because there aren’t many graphically intensive titles for macOS. Players use computers or consoles instead. Or maybe an iPhone and an iPad these days. It doesn’t matter that the latest MacBook Pro can compete with the graphics power of the PlayStation 5, some have games and others don’t.

But maybe this will turn into a “build and they will come” scenario. Now that Apple is making computers capable of top-notch gaming, developers may start offering games to take advantage of that.
