The morning after: Facebook’s empire is disappearing


I locked myself out of my apartment yesterday. It’s a rare occurrence, but when it happens, I usually send a WhatsApp message to the group of my building, asking someone to contact me. So it wasn’t a great time for the entire Facebook network, including WhatsApp, Instagram (oh and Oculus), to crash for six hours.

Although it is unclear what exactly happened, during the downtime, the company’s outgoing chief technology officer, Michael Schroepfer, said it was due to a “networking problem”.

Even within Facebook, problems reportedly led to employees not being able to access email, the workplace, and other tools. The New York Times reported that employees were also physically locked out of the office as workers ’badges stopped working. Poor Facebook.

By yesterday at 18:00 ET, most services were back, although the Facebook for Business Status page still showed “major disruptions” in basic services. On Facebook – when he was online again – CEO Mark Zuckerberg due to a drop in services.

That didn’t help me solve the low priority problem. Luckily, I collected some of my neighbor’s phone numbers from WhatsApp and sent a few 00s-style SMS SOS messages. Twenty minutes later, I finally returned to my home.

She says the company “chooses profit instead of security”.

Published internal documents The Wall Street Journal it was recently revealed that Facebook allowed VIPs to break its rules, and that it was aware that Instagram was affecting the mental health of teenagers. The whistleblower who brought that information to light revealed himself as Frances Haugen in an interview with 60 minutes.

“I saw a bunch of social media, and it was significantly worse on Facebook than I had seen before,” Haugen told the show. “Facebook has repeatedly shown that it chooses profit instead of security.”

Haugen joined Facebook in 2019, working on democracy and disinformation issues while also engaging in espionage, according to a personal website and Twitter account she and her team opened. She worked as a Facebook product manager and left the company in May.

Apple has announced when you will be able to get the Apple Watch Series 7. Pre-orders start this Friday, October 8, at 8:00 AM ET. The device, which costs $ 399, will be available a week later, on October 15th.

The biggest change this year is the bigger, always open screen.
