The morning after: Amazon discovers its Alexa robot equipped with a periscope

Amazon’s annual battery of new Echo hardware didn’t disappoint, ranging from role-playing games to monitoring food, drones and video calling devices for kids. I think the new 15-inch Echo Show, a smart screen to mount on your wall, was the most intriguing discovery.

Amazon

Amazon has redesigned its home screen to make the most of the extra display space, and you can customize it so that part of the screen scrolls through ambient content, such as titles and time updates. Focused on families, Echo Show 15 also has a new visual identification feature that can recognize your face and show you personalized information, such as calendar appointments, reminders and notes.

Amazon and Google dominate the space of smart screens, and I could be a rare exception to not having a single device in my home that uses Alexa. So far, Amazon’s devices haven’t offered me anything particularly appealing. I have a Google smart screen, which integrates smoothly with Google Calendar, Google Maps and more. I find it hard to arouse great enthusiasm for the Echo range.

Now that I’ve said that, let me counteract it completely.

If you like your Alexa devices on wheels and with insecure expandable periscope cameras, you might be excited by Amazon’s Astro robot. (Or worried.) Amazon plans to sell its first robot in limited quantities later this year. It will finally cost $ 1,450, but as part of its first-day release program, the company will sell the robot at a starting price of $ 1,000.

IKEA

A new, more customizable version of IKEA and Sonos from their Symfonisk speaker lamp arrives on October 12th. The furniture giant will sell the base and shade of the new model separately, so you can mix and stack the parts to make sure the final product matches the ambiance of your home.

IKEA’s Stjepan Begic said they decided to reduce the base after learning that many people use the Symfonisk lamp on their nightstand. You will be able to choose between two types of shades: textile or glass, while the lamps themselves come in black or white. The new model also supports a wider selection of bulbs, thanks to the different E26 / E27 sockets.

The call-only program will help improve the technology.

Ring says his Always Home Cam, the first home security drone, will soon arrive in select households. Users will be able to sign up to join the on-call testing program to improve the hardware before it appears on the shelves. At least in the US, Ring owners can apply to help develop what manufacturers call a “very ambitious device.”

I doubt any of us are surprised.

This time last year, ByteDance was trying to preserve its TikTok app in the U.S. and elsewhere after the Donald Trump administration threatened to ban it. One potential savior was Microsoft.

It was a mess. It all started when Trump threatened to force the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok to the American owner, citing privacy and security concerns. Microsoft entered as a potential buyer, although the company eventually reached an agreement with Oracle and Walmart, which was terminated by President Joe Biden’s administration in February 2021.

Microsoft was in the middle of negotiations with ByteDance when Trump told reporters he would rather ban the app than allow it to be sold to a U.S. company. That “messed up the careful negotiations we had with ByteDance” about buying TikTok’s business in the U.S. and three other countries, CEO Satya Nadella wrote. Trump relented and allowed the deal to happen after Nadella called him personally.

Following Oracle’s winning bid, ByteDance said Trump “insulted” the site, effectively silencing it after ordering the company to sell its TikTok assets in the United States.
