The lenses in Apple AR glasses can be adapted to the user’s eye recipes

Wow, self-adjusting glasses that focus on whatever you look at.

Apple is preparing for the future in which you put on glasses and they automatically adjust to your eyes. On Tuesday, he received a patent for a system to manage this process. The self-adjusting lenses are probably intended for augmented reality glasses, which Apple is rumored to be working on.

This could be the end of the trip to the ophthalmologist to get a prescription for lenses. The glasses will take care of that.

Apple AR glasses could have “adjustable” lenses

Apple on Tuesday received a patent for adjustable and foveated lens systems (# 11,221,488) from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Filing a patent is at least technical. But it starts with a pair of glasses with adjustable lenses. “Adjustable lenses may include adjustable lenses with a liquid crystal recess and adjustable non-liquid crystal lenses, such as fluid-filled lenses or Alvarez lenses,” the abstract said.

The proposed glasses will collect data about the user’s eyes, and then adjust the optical power of the lens based on that data. The glasses will continue to follow the user’s eyes to ensure that the lenses use the correct optical power.

A serious advantage for Apple glasses

Numerous leaks suggest that the iPhone maker is working on a pair of augmented reality glasses. They would allow the user to do almost anything they do now with the iPhone, but via a heads-up display held in front of their eyes. They would be carried everywhere, and information would be covered by the real world, not replace it.

Those who need prescription lenses should incorporate them into Apple AR glasses – but not if the glasses can be adjusted to the user’s eyes.

Developing the technology needed to make all this mainstream will take years. Apple’s augmented reality glasses aren’t expected before 2025, and may last longer. VR headsets with AR capabilities are expected much earlier.

And self-adjusting the lens may not happen. Patent filing is not a product announcement. Apple engineers often patent designs that are never seen again.
