The film, which premiered at the Sundance 2021 Film Festival and won four awards, is now airing on Apple TV +. ‘CODA’ tells the story of Ruby, “the only hearing member of the deaf family – CODA, the child of adult deaf people.”
Seventeen-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones) is the only hearing member of the deaf-CODA family, a child of deaf adults. Her life revolves around acting as translators for her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) and working on the family’s troubled fishing boat every day before school with her father and older brother (Daniel Durant). But when Ruby joins her high school singing club, she discovers a gift for singing and soon finds herself attracted to her duet partner Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). Encouraged by her enthusiastic, fierce choirmaster (Eugenio Derbez) to apply to a prestigious music school, Ruby finds herself torn between the obligations she feels towards her family and the search for her own dreams.
