If you’re tired of trying to unlock iPhone 13 with the Apple Watch, but just to experience a major failure, don’t worry: you’re not alone.
Apple he said on Sunday in a support note that includes its handy “Apple Watch Unlock” feature, which allows users wearing a face mask or sunglasses to unlock their device without a Face ID or password as long as they have the Apple Watch turned on, it may not work on some iPhone 13s. The company said users trying to unlock their phone might get a message saying “I can’t communicate with the Apple Watch” or may not be able to set up this feature at all.
Users with the iPhone 13s have reported in recent days that the bug seems to have only affected Apple’s latest phone line. Some have stated that this feature worked well on older models such as the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Only iPhone X and later versions can use this feature along with Apple Watch Series 3 and later.
For iPhone 13 users who love this feature, Apple unfortunately doesn’t have a quick fix, although its remark on Sunday at least means you can stop trying to fix it. (Various users have bravely tried to reset, pair, and repair for hours without success). Some have reported that a complete reset of both devices solved the problem, but this seems to be the case a lot problems you have to go through just to be able to unlock your phone for hours when there are, you know, other options for it.
Apple has promised that the bug will be fixed in a future software update, although it did not say what the problem was or when to expect the update. Until then, iPhone 13 users are most likely out of luck.
“Until the update is available, you can turn off the Unlock using the Apple Watch and use the code to unlock the iPhone 13,” Apple said.
To turn off the Apple Watch Unlock feature, go to Settings> Face ID and password.
