Come on, do I really need a suitcase?
I have a friend who is proud not to use a purse, despite my advice to use it. Surprise, surprise: She dropped it and smashed the screen and corners of her iPhone. When I worked at the Apple Store, I saw more cracked / damaged / dropped phones than I could count, and I was a product expert (seller), not a technician (repair person).
But since you’re here to hear my advice, this is it: Use a holster. There is no excuse to say, “I don’t like cases,” because there are so many options. Even the thinnest, almost invisible housings are better protection than none at all. I still recommend purchasing AppleCare + because some drops will damage even with the case. But AppleCare + only brings you a few fixes (or replacements), and you’ll still have to pay a deduction. In addition, the repair can take hours in your day. So, a simple case could save you a lot of time and money.
Should I spend a lot on a decent case?
Absolutely not. I have various holsters in regular rotation because I like to match my holster with my clothes. Prices for my favorite holsters range from about $ 10 to $ 100. A cheap TPU case can protect, as well as the most elegant leather of the highest quality, sometimes even better. The shape and construction of the case are more important than the price or material.
How do I know if the case is protective enough?
A bulky, robust and durable case will surely be more protective than a thinner case. Whether you are dealing with a heavy load or not, always look for the edges of the case that are higher than the screen level, so if you place your iPhone face down on the table, the screen will not contact the table. You also want the back of the phone cover to be thicker than the protrusion of the camera, or at least to have a raised lip to provide some protection to the camera lenses. It’s nice to have some sort of textured holder on the edges of the case to reduce the likelihood of you dropping the case at all. Also, look for a bumper that goes all around the phone if you don’t want micro-scratches to appear on the phone cover. Reinforced corners are also a good idea because the area is so sensitive to falls.
Will a barely durable holster protect at all?
There is hardly anything better than not having it at all. It will definitely protect your iPhone from scratches. You may get protection from very light / gentle falls. I dropped my iPhone in a holster that is barely on the sidewalk from waist height, and it suffered enough damage that I had to repair it. If I was indoors and fell on the carpet, maybe it would be okay. But I can’t recommend a barely durable fall protection case.
Do I also need a screen protector?
I absolutely recommend the screen protectors. If you don’t have it on your iPhone, micro-scratches will appear on the screen over time, even if you are quite careful. The screen protector can also help keep your iPhone’s screen from cracking when dropped. When I was working at Apple, I saw several people coming for a new screen protector because it cracked in their drops … but the iPhone screen was still intact below.
What kind of case is best?
It is a completely personal decision. A durable holster is obviously your best protection against the will of gravity, but if you’re like me, you really don’t like a bulky holster. I will use one if I have to, for example, if I spend my two AppleCare + incidents, for example. I choose a thin to medium holster, but you choose. I’m not too picky about the material, I like TPU if the case is nice, but I also like luxurious leather.
Otherwise, it’s all about the set of features you need. Are you planning to use wireless charging? Then don’t choose a case with a ring, wallet or PopSocket on the back. If you don’t have to charge wirelessly, these features on the back can come in handy. Portfolio-style wallet cases are a practical all-in-one solution if you don’t want to carry a special wallet. However, they are bulky, so the foil doesn’t pay off if you don’t need that feature.
Which one to choose?
You can’t go wrong with an iPhone case designed by Apple. The Apple silicone case is thin and fits the iPhone 11 like a glove. It is smooth on the outside without slippery; The inside is soft microfiber that prevents scratches.
On the other hand, I love the housings of the Otter + Pop Symmetry series. You get a nice, protective case that isn’t overly bulky. Wireless charging won’t work consistently because of the PopSocket on the back, but that PopSocket makes for a terribly handy phone holder for selfies and a stand for watching videos. PopSocket is easy to replace if you want to express different moods without changing the case itself.
