Late Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order banning any entity in the state, including private companies, from requiring customers or employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Interestingly, the order does not apply to a number of other vaccinations required to participate in society, such as seven vaccines children are required to attend school in Texas.
President Joe Biden recently announced that the COVID-19 vaccine will soon be needed for all employees in companies with at least 100 people — an order to be implemented through existing workplace surveillance measures that are monitored by OSHA. But it is not clear how well the mandate will be implemented, especially if it is contrary to state orders, such as the new one in Texas.
Only 51.9% of Texans were vaccinated against COVID-19, well below the national figure of 56.8%. And the cases are still alarmingly high, with a seven-day average of new cases at approximately 7,200. Approximately 241 people in Texas die daily from covid-19.
Governor Abbott, a Republican, issued a statement insisting that vaccines against COVID-19 are safe and effective, even going so far as to say they are the best defense against the virus. But the end of his statement completely undermines every positive thing he said.
“The covid-19 vaccine is safe, effective and our best defense against the virus, but it should remain voluntary and by no means coercive,” Governor Abbott said.
Did you get that? While acknowledging that vaccination is safe and tacitly acknowledging the vaccine is the only thing that can eventually end the pandemic, Abbott winks and nods to his vaccine base to promise his loyalty. It just so happens that it’s a devotion to death and disease.
Full text executive order:
No entity in Texas may compel the receipt of a COVID-19 vaccine by any individual, including an employee or consumer, who opposes such vaccination for any reason of personal conscience, religious belief, or medical reasons, including prior recovery from COVID-19. I hereby suspend all relevant laws to the extent necessary to enforce this prohibition.
The vaccination mandate is extremely popular with the vast majority of American workers, who would rather not work together with selfish assholes who refuse to be vaccinated against COVID-19. In fact, United Airlines recorded a large increase in the number of job candidates after it began issuing the covid-19 vaccine to all workers. The company saw more than 20,000 people apply for flight attendants for about 2,000 positions, which is by standards New York Times.
Will Governor Abbott’s executive order oppose Biden’s federal order prescribing vaccines? We’ll learn soon. But even before the Texas order was signed Monday night, many Republicans had already promised to sue the Feds over President Biden’s term.
If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, there’s still time. The various FOV-approved vaccines against COVID-19 are safe, effective and free. Go for the bullet, provided you are not one of them small number people who need a medical exemption because you have a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine. That is the only thing that will get us out of this pandemic and move on with our lives.
