Tesla under investigation for ‘Passenger Play’ function

earlier this month there was criticism that certain games could be played on the infotainment system control panel while the EV was on the move. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is now investigating Tesla for its so-called “Passenger Games” function.

A preliminary estimate by the Failure Research Agency (ODI) covers about 580,000 Model 3, S, X and Y vehicles sold since 2017. Although this feature encourages players to acknowledge that they are passengers before starting the game, NHTSA Passenger Play said it may be distracting drivers and increase the risk of collisions. “

Report with New York Times He noted that an update released by Tesla over the summer allowed for three games that could be played while the car was moving. Previously, Passenger Play was only available when EV was in the park. Earlier in December, NHTSA told Engadget to talk to Tesla about this function.

ODI said a preliminary assessment would assess the potential for driver distractions in Passenger Play while EV is moving. It will look at different aspects of Passenger Play, including usage scenarios and how often it is used.

Announcing the investigation, NHTSA cited a report submitted to the agency in August. “Tesla now allows interactive video games and live Internet browsing on the main front seat display while the car is being driven,” the complaint said. “Why is the manufacturer allowed to create inherently jamming live video that takes up 2/3 of the screen the driver relies on for all vehicle information? Creating dangerous jamming for the driver is recklessly negligent.”

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment . The company no longer has a PR department.
