Sony has introduced the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II zoom lens which looks like an interesting option for hybrid video and photo recorders. Designed for the company’s mirrorless, full-format, Alpha series cameras, it’s the lightest 70-200mm F2.8 lens on the market with 1,045 grams, Sony said. It also offers a range of features intended for filmmakers that are not usually seen in a lens like this.
While large zoom lenses tend to focus slowly, Sony said the new model uses four XD linear motors to deliver reliable focus that is up to three times faster than competing models and four times faster than the previous model on Sony’s Alpha 1 camera. autofocus with zoom is improved by 30 percent compared to the first generation model. It also focuses quietly, so it is less likely that the sound of the engine will catch the camera microphone.
Video recorders often have to shift focus between subjects, but lenses intended for photography usually show “breathing” or zooming as they change focus. Sony said it designed the FE 70-200 F2.8 GM OSS II to reduce this while at the same time reducing focus shift during zooming. Such features are usually only found in cinema lenses that cost significantly more.
The lens should provide a nice bokeh thanks to the wide, continuous aperture of F2.8, while offering good handling with dual lens elements that move from the inside. It also offers three separate focus rings, an aperture and a zoom, making it easy to set up for cinema use. Other features include high resolution, extremely low dispersion, aspherical glass to combat chromatic aberrations, Sony’s Nano AR coating II to reduce glare and ghosts, and a new 11-blade opening that produces a softer, more circular bokeh.
Sony also offers FE 1.4x and FE 2.0x teleconverters ($ 548 for both) that increase the focal length of the lens by up to 400mm at F5.6. The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II zoom lens will go on sale in December for $ 2,800.
