Snapchat adds spooky features for Halloween, showing off its latest AR tools


Snapchat has announced a number of new features for Halloween, including themed lenses, Bitmoji costumes and an updated Snap Map view for the event.

First, regarding the new AR features – connecting to the topic, while promoting Snap’s advanced branded content tools, Snapchat has has partnered with several brands, including Walmart and Home Depot, on a series of custom Halloween lenses.

Among the various options, Walmart has a new AR costume experience for Halloween, Mars-Wrigley has launched the ‘Haunted House portal’, which uses advanced 3D body tracking, while Home Depot has a new 12-foot skeletal lens.

The lenses essentially serve as a showcase for Snap’s brand AR development tools, which will see additional engagement in line with the event, which Snap will no doubt use in future brand presentations about AR’s potential for their campaigns.

Snap has also teamed up with AR creators to celebrate Frankenstein’s 90th anniversary, with a series of Frankenstein-themed lenses also added to the app.

In addition to this, Snapchat has added its own Werewolf Lens lens, which uses Snap’s next-level ‘body mesh’ technology to create an experience that will allow them to react impressively.

As Snap explains:

“[Body mesh] applies personalized effects to the body that automatically match each individual Snapchatter, while body reshaping technology turns Snapchatter’s body into the shape of a specific character. ”

Additional Snap lenses for Halloween also use “outerwear segmentation,” which digitally changes your upper body clothing, and “world transformation ‘, which applies real-world changes and effects to surrounding objects and the environment.

Snapchat has also added a number of Bitmoji clothes to dress up your characters in the app:

Halloween seems to be the main celebration this year, amid reduced quarantines and distancing regulations, allowing for a return to more traditional approaches and events. And given that 77% of Snapchatters plan to use the app during Halloween, it makes sense for Snap, in particular, to rely on, while also providing another opportunity to showcase its latest AR tools and features, which are advancing more and more every day.

The Halloween Snap features will be active in the app over the next week.
