Selected owners of the 16-inch MacBook Pro are facing MagSafe charging issues

Apple’s M1 Pro / Max MacBook Pro sets a new standard in terms of power and efficiency. They also bring back some useful features present in previous generations of the MacBook, such as the MagSafe charging port, HDMI port and more. Every new Apple product usually has some issues, and the new MacBook Pro is no different. Several M1 Pro / Max MacBook users report that their machine refuses to charge when properly turned off.

Users report that the LED on the MagSafe charging cable turns on / off continuously without charging the MacBook properly. Contacting Apple Support did not help, as the suggested troubleshooting steps only temporarily resolved the issue. Apple has acknowledged the problem and recommends that users charge their MacBook while they are in sleep mode or with the lid open. Another option is to connect the MagSafe cable before turning off the machine. The problem only appears to occur when a user tries to charge their MacBook after turning it off.

In some cases, Apple technicians instructed users to run some diagnostics and eventually replaced their entire machine. The problem is probably related to the firmware on the new MacBook Pro. Apple seems to be diagnosing the cause of the problem, after which it should drop the update to fix it. The problem also seems to affect only a limited number of 16-inch MacBook Pro users.

There are several other long-standing bugs in macOS Big Sur, including a memory leak that Apple should address sooner rather than later.
