Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 Review

Samsung is new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 The handset takes folding phones to new heights and reaches a growing segment of the population, thanks to significant improvements in design, user experience and pricing. Is this the phone for you? Through our experience you can find out if this is the right device for you. Let’s dive deep into this exciting phone.

Our testing unit is 128 GB AT&T cream Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G (SKU SM-F711U) with Samsung One UI 3.1.1 with mmWave 5G for optimal peak speeds over 5G. Other operators may or may not support this type of 5G, so check with your mobile operator before buying a phone.

There is also pre-installed software, such as DirectTV or AT&T Cloud and Mobile Security, which are not included in unlocked handsets or non-AT&T phones. In addition, the overall experience should be very similar among all Z Flip3 models worldwide.

The collapsible design is obviously a place to start as it is the essence of this phone. Samsung’s goal (in my opinion) is to create an extremely pocket-sized smartphone that has no significant drawbacks compared to classic phones like the Galaxy S21 and S21 +. We have posted more photos on Instagram, join us!

Flip phones are proven form factors and we already know that people (sometimes) love them. They were abandoned because the demand for large, monolithic screens became the norm, but with Samsung’s foldable OLED technology, the foldable design is back again.

Z Flip3 brings important design updates that close the gap with standard phones. Z Flip3 is now waterproof, and that’s it extremely important for the survival of the phone. The glass surface is more resistant, the hinges are better designed, and the entire chassis feels extremely solid despite having moving parts.

Samsung has a large selection of protection options for users who worry about falling phones, including very smart cases. Third-party accessories, such as leather, offer more original options if needed.

The new color scheme in 2 tones looks elegant, and we got a black / cream that looks great, but my favorite would be pink, green or a lavender version. In any case, the two-tone design provides a visual clue to the device’s orientation, other than the tactile feel of the hinges.

It is fair to say that the Galaxy Z Flip3 is the most beautiful Flip Folding phone that testifies to Samsung’s design and production. Motorola is the only competitor nearby, and the rest is mostly a story, with no products.

For left-handers, the location of the power and volume buttons is a little too high, but since the hinges take up a lot of space, I’m not sure this could be improved, even in the next generation.

I find the Galaxy Z Flip3 to be extremely pocket-sized. Anyone who wore something like the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra or S21 Ultra would fully appreciate the difference as well The Z Flip3 is very comfortable in the trouser pockets. Visually, it’s also a huge success, but you can decide on the photos yourself.

User experience

In addition to physical compactness, Z Flip3 brings unique experiences to users. For example, you can use the phone with a curved screen at almost all angles (Flex mode) between fully closed and fully open. Sometimes it’s just super handy.

You can put it on the video viewing surface, jump on a conference call, or near a timelapse window. I love this flexibility and I doubt most users will enjoy that aspect of the phone.

Does the Galaxy Z Flip3 call end? The answer is “yes, it can”, but that is not the default behavior. Samsung has a “Answer and end call” setting to select how to answer or end a call.

New, a larger cover with a touch screen makes the phone much more useful when closed. It is now large enough to provide a typical on-screen experience. I usually have visible clock and music controls on a classic phone, but the experience on the Z Flip3 cover screen is more important if you don’t want to open / close your phone often.

You can choose which app widgets will appear there, along with the usual music controls and world clocks. I’m sure most people would want an even bigger title screen, but this one handles everyday use cases well enough.

I enjoyed being easy to use a higher quality rear selfie camera using the title screen to view the recording. When closed, you can hold the phone much firmer and use the volume button as the shutter button.

Galaxy Z Flip3 Camera

Rear Camera Features Z Flip3 Primary i Ultrawide camera, which is a combination that covers the most important cases of using mobile photos: day, night and ultra-wide photography. There is no dedicated Zoom camera, and the primary camera module manages this function as best it can.

If we go deeper into the Z Flip3 camera technique compared to the Galaxy S21, we can see that it is too small compared to its cousin the S21. The Sony IMX563 Z Flip3 is significantly smaller than Samsung’s S5KGW2 sensor on the S21, and the same goes for the ultra-wide camera.

Probably a factor as to why they’re doing so poorly the S21 chassis is 13% thicker than the Z Flip3, giving engineers more room to work. Larger sensors need more space, which is why all high-end phones have significant camera protrusions, which seems awkward for now.

These technical differences are shown in our CAMERA HW rating, and actual shooting tests show differences in detail, color accuracy, noise levels, and other image quality characteristics compared to the S21 and S21 Ultra. Once again, the camera hardware directly affects the image quality.

Very vivid reference image taken with the S21 Ultra. This is very close to what the eyes see in the real world. We will crop the green area, but keep in mind the great consistency of Samsung’s image adjustment via Z Flip3, S21 and S21 Ultra.

Samsung’s color adjustment is great and very consistent on all phones, despite significant differences in camera equipment. No (software) adjustment can eventually make up for the difference in actual image quality. But it can help preserve the natural colors and mood of the scene as much as optics and sensors can record.

Some differences in image quality, such as detail or noise, are not very visible on social media or on the phone screen. However, they would stand out more on a laptop or TV.

All in all, the quality of the photos is outstanding compared to the size of the phone. I believe that customers of Z Flip3 will be satisfied with the experience with the camera, especially since its camera is better than its main rival, the foldable Motorola RAZR 5G, according to our CAMERA HW scale.

Looking at the phone straight, the crease is almost invisible

As usual, the image quality (100% sRGB) i 720 NIT brightness 6.7-inch OLED screen the screen is top notch and people have gotten used to it since Samsung.

The most common questions about this revolve around the crease located just above the hinge mechanism. Can you see that, and can you to feel??

During normal use, don’t try to see the creases (see photo above), and I often forget it’s even there until I look at the screen from the corner, or if the image is very dark and the surface catches reflection from near light. The brighter the environment, the more likely you are to see a crease, but this has never been a problem in the user experience.

But depending on the angle, reflections can detect it

On the other hand, you will feel wrinkles on your fingertips as you use the touch screen in that area. The thumb movement usually stays inside the lower half of the screen and well below the crease. Sliding on the index more often affects the fold. Is that a problem? I don’t think so, but you can always try to be sure on your own.

The Refresh rate 120 Hz is new to this model and provides a smooth possible experience without affecting battery life as it automatically drops to 60 Hz when needed. Once you get used to 120 Hz, you may find it hard to go back to 60 Hz.

Samsung said that the new (flexible) glass is approximately 30% harder than the previous generation, with plastic screen protection.

In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 888 platform does not provide a compromise compared to most leading Androids equipped with the same processor, such as the S21 and S21 +. Performance is great, including intensive graphics applications like modern games. Not far from the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which has a more modern cooling system.

The 8 GB RAM is firmer than other Android phones, and people who like to install a bunch of apps (100+) might want something bigger, but that’s not a problem for most. The basic model has 128 GB of storage space, and the maximum is 256 GB because there is no micro-SD option.

I’d love to see a 512GB version for a slightly higher price, but the motherboard is small, so we may have to wait for denser memory chips to reach that storage capacity in this design. Maybe in 2022?

Battery life

Due to the nature of the chassis, the battery capacity is relatively small 3300 mAh, which is significantly lower than 4800 mAh S21 +. Since both run on a comparable processor platform and have an equivalent screen area, you should expect a drop in battery life proportional to the difference in capacity.

And this is shown by battery tests (browsing the web). The Galaxy S21 + lasts 10 hours, while the Galaxy Z Flip3 would probably last 6.5 to 7 hours. For light use, you may only need to charge it daily. However, heavy users should be more careful in managing battery life.

A small battery could be mitigated by super-fast charging, but unfortunately, the Z Flip3 doesn’t charge particularly fast. 15W wire charging i 10W wireless charging are today’s basic charging speeds at this price, and there are much faster options.

The unique challenge in industrial design and heat dissipation are probably the main challenges for charging this phone faster. Battery life is the primary Achilles heel of the Z Flip3 compared to the classic S21 + cousin.

The Galaxy Z Flip3 is a unique phone with one goal: to give you an ultra-compact folding phone with as little compromise as possible compared to a “classic” Galaxy phone at similar prices.

And for the most part, delivers almost identical computer performance and old functions. However, shorter battery life and poorer camera performance (in that order) are essential elements to consider. So far, the satisfaction rate of Z Flip3 users is very high and I expect it to stay that way.

It brings unique user experience and a form adored by many customers who are willing to ignore a few weaknesses that we have highlighted in favor of a satisfying look, feel, and model of use. As I look around and on the Internet, I see more and more people ready to “overlap”, and it is predicted that Samsung will deliver many more folding phones this year.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 may not be for everyone, but every indicator shows that this market is falling fast. Samsung has created a big screen display category and it would be interesting to see if Foldables follow a similar trajectory.

If you are considering purchasing a Galaxy Z Flip3, visit Samsung’s official website for discounts and other incentives. At the time of release, it was possible to trade old phones like the iPhone 7 for about $ 300.
