Rocket League comes on iPhone and iPad, but not the way you know it

Rocket League has finally reached the iPhone and iPad – but it’s not quite the same game that has proven popular on consoles and PCs. Sideswipe is a completely new approach to the formula that was made especially for mobile gaming.

The free game contains 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 matches in which players fight to throw the ball into the opponent’s net. “Soccar” and “Hoops” game modes are also available, and Rocket Pass and Seasons are coming soon.

Rocket League download on mobile

Rocket League she won gold when in 2015 she connected rocket-powered cars with football. The game has picked up countless prizes on almost all modern platforms, and still sees hundreds of thousands of players each month.

Developer Psyonix took over Epic Games in 2019, and after success Fortnite on mobile devices (before Apple banned it from the App Store), it seemed like it was only a matter of time Rocket League it would also make a breakthrough on smartphones. But unlike its cousin, it is not a complete port.

Epic and Psyonix certainly felt that fast-playing rocket cars probably wouldn’t turn out so well on touch screens, so they developed a whole new title called Rocket League Sideswipe. It’s a different, somewhat diluted view of the main game, but it’s a lot of fun.

Sideswipe allows small teams of two or individuals to compete in two-minute “soccar” (like football) or Hoops (like basketball) games in which the goal is to score as many goals as possible.

Like real Rocket League, but not really

A lot of the same mechanics from the main game are present Sideswipe. You can jump, spin and rise into the air to control the ball. You can also raise the walls, which is especially handy when defending your net.

Because Sideswipe is located in a two-dimensional world, it is not possible to collide or destroy other players. You simply drive through each other, because there is no other way to avoid a mammoth accident.

I’m big Rocket League fan and although it’s certainly a bit of a disappointment that we don’t have a complete experience here, I played a bunch Sideswipe match and is definitely a lot of fun as a mobile game.

You can download Sideswipe now free from the App Store. It’s in “pre-season” for now, says Psyonix, but Rocket Pass and Seasons come later, giving you the goals you need to accomplish and new content to unlock. And if you want the truth Rocket League on a mobile device, you can get it via GeForce Now.
