Review of AirPods 3: Decent Upgrade?

Before the new AirPods 3 reaches customers and goes on sale tomorrow, the first set of first impressions, reviews and unpacking of the new AirPods headsets has been announced. First impressions are mostly positive, and publishers appreciate Apple making AirPods more affordable while bringing features that were previously limited to AirPods Pro.

To get you up to speed, the AirPods 3 has a completely redesigned case with smaller stems, custom drivers to reduce distortion, MagSafe charging case, Adaptive EQ, IPX4 resistance to sweat and water for the case and AirPods, up to 30 hours of battery life and support for Spatial Audio. Check out our AirPods 3 review and first impressions below.

All in all, Engadget has found the design to be more comfortable, with improved sound and longer battery life. A complete redesign is still returning to the original AirPods design, with some modifications, he notes.

“You will immediately notice the lack of silicone olives found on the Pro. The overall fit of the new model is similar to that of the first two AirPods,… This design mix continues on the stem as well. Apple has reduced the length of the component by a third compared to the previous model, adding a force sensor from AirPods Pro for on-board controls. ”

You can’t adjust the volume using the AirPods headphones themselves and that could be a problem for some.

“With the shift to forced sensor-driven controls, Apple has given AirPods the same actions as AirPods Pro. On the second-generation model, you had to touch the handset, and the options were very limited. Like the Pro version, you now have the ability to play / pause and accept calls (press once), skip tracks forward (press twice), skip tracks backwards (press three times) and activate Siri (press and hold). Once again, there is no option to control the volume on the panel. Press and hold the input on the AirPods Pro to change the noise cancellation mode, so it looks like Apple could have redirected this action for volume – up on one side, down on the other. ”

While the sound quality isn’t the best in the price segment, it’s better than previous vanilla AirPods headphones.

“I don’t want to hesitate: the new AirPods sound much better than the previous two versions. Like almost night and day better. Apple has not made any significant changes in sound quality from the first model to the 2019 version. But for the third generation, Apple has paired a custom driver with a high dynamic range amplifier to enhance audio clips. The company says the duo are working together to create “rich consistent bass” and “sharp, clean” treble. From the moment I played the first song, it was all immediately apparent. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say “Woah” with the first note of a guitar on any review unit, but given how much older AirPods sound on average, this time it was inadvertent. “

Expressing a similar opinion, The Verge noted that the new shape works better to keep AirPods in place. However, the ambient sounds remain audible and it may not be to everyone’s taste.

“They are so well in place that I no longer feel the same anxiety because they will roll over on the ground and down the sewer grate. That concern has always been present in older AirPods. A healthy dose of ambient sound remains, and I’m just someone who prefers headphones that offer a bit of silence from the outside world. ”

The publication’s biggest complaint was that the sound quality and design were a big step forward, but the inconsistency of Spatial Audio in Apple Music was a nuisance, but not because of Apple’s mistakes.

“Spatial audio mixes can often objectively sound worse than their stereo counterparts. It takes a lot of work from engineers and producers to get the most out of Atmos, and it remains obvious that many of the albums available in Spatial Audio on Apple Music haven’t attracted as much attention. Instruments and effects can sound inappropriate, vocals can drown in the mix, and so on. ”

Verge believes a lot has changed since AirPods 2 and buyers should explore other options in the market before pulling the trigger

“But before you delve deeper into Apple’s ecosystem, it’s worth exploring your options. The game has changed a lot since the second generation AirPods were released and it is possible to find better sound quality among competitors such as Samsung, OnePlus, Anker, Amazon and others. If you can without decorations, you can spend much less and still be happy. However, if you have an iPhone, none of them can provide the same flawless experience as AirPods. ”

Gizmodo’s positive review shares the above-mentioned opinions on workmanship, design, fit and sound quality.

“I’ve always struggled to keep the original AirPods in my ears, to the point that I skipped them completely and waited for the AirPods Pro to arrive. But it’s much easier for me to keep the new AirPods in place, even during light physical activities like walking. They’re actually a bit heavier than the original AirPods headphones, but the shorter bracket combined with the more modern design that puts the main speaker at a better angle seems to offer better weight distribution. ”

As for the wireless charging case compatible with MagSafe, wrote Gizmodo

“It turns out, while you can’t attach a small card wallet to the back of the AirPods charging case, it will do the same thing as the iPhone 12 and 13 models when thrown on a MagSafe compatible wireless charging pad. The case will be perfectly aligned with the filling coil and will be magnetically attached to the base, so that it is almost impossible to accidentally knock it down during filling. It works great, and it’s especially useful considering how small the wireless receiver is on the AirPods charging case. ”

In short, the publication said that although there are decent alternatives on the market now, AirPods 3 are a worthy upgrade for Apple users because of the comfort and convenience they offer.

“Does that mean the new AirPods are passes? Not all. They’re a fantastic upgrade in every way, and for those who hate having silicone tips pushed into their ear canals (I’ve been using them for decades, and even my ears still hurt after prolonged use), the new AirPods headphones are incredibly comfortable. to use while still providing amazing sound quality – something I didn’t think possible. I’ve been carrying them around the house all day since they arrived, and of all the wireless headphones I’ve tested over the years, nothing is nearly as comfortable. ”
