Pokémon Go joins metaversion with Ed Sheeran collaboration, returns Squirtle with sunglasses

Pokémon Go today announced a new collaboration event with Ed Sheeran. Starting Nov. 22, coaches will be able to check out Ed Sheeran’s performance in the In-Game News.

This is the first time that Pokémon Go has created a music event with a real person. Earlier this year, Niantic promoted a festival featuring the mythical singer Pokémon Meloetta, which was the most lucrative weekend for the brand, apart from the one-day Kanto Tour event held in the first half.

According to a blog post, Ed Sheeran’s special performance will take place between November 22 and November 30. His concert will include songs from =, Ed’s new album and more. Songs include:

  • “Perfect”
  • “Bad habits”
  • “Graphite Overpass”
  • “Thinking out loud”
  • “First time”
  • “trembling”

With this show, coaches will be able to find a Squirtle wearing sunglasses in the game. It’s been a long time since Pokémon Go introduced this particular monster, and people who later joined the game will finally have a chance to catch it

Not only that, but Totodile, Mudkip, Piplup and Oshawott will start appearing a bit more often in the wild. Everyone, of course, can be found in a great version.

Ed always chooses a water-type Pokémon as his first partner when he starts a Pokémon RPG. To celebrate this collaboration, look forward to an event that will feature all of Pokémon’s first water-type partner currently available at Pokémon GO!

While it’s unclear what this gig will look like in the game, it’s strange that Pokémon Go joins this metaverse just after Niantic CEO John Hanke said he was against Facebook’s (aka Meta) metaverse of the future and doubled this AR future.

For Hanke, the metaverse is dystopian: “It distances us from what essentially makes us happy as human beings.” He also said:

“I really embarked on this idea of using digital technology to revive the idea of a public square, to get people off the couch and out into an environment they can enjoy. There is a lot of research that supports the positive psychological impact of walking through the park, walking through the woods – just walking.

No matter what Niantic’s CEO thinks, one thing is for sure. Starting November 22, Pokémon Go trainers will have a brand new event. There will also be new music in the game with Overpass Graffiti that will be played every night in the game starting next week. New avatar items, stickers and packages will also be available.
