People & Pets Not Indexing in Photos? 5 Fixes That Work

Quick answer: Face scanning usually stalls silently rather than failing. Open a person in Photos > Albums > People & Pets, tap the three-dot button, open Review Photos Identified as [Name], uncheck one photo and confirm, then reopen the menu and tap Review More Photos. That re-queues scanning for your whole library, not just that one person.

Why this happens

The People & Pets album is built by an on-device scanning process that runs when your iPhone is locked, charging and connected to Wi-Fi. It is deliberately low priority: it yields to anything else the phone is doing, pauses in Low Power Mode, and stops when the battery gets warm or low.

That design is fine until the scan gets stuck. A single interrupted pass, a large import from an old iPhone, or a restore from backup can leave the scanner idle with a half-built index. Nothing in the UI tells you it has stopped. The People album just sits there with the same handful of faces, or with none at all, and no amount of waiting fixes it.

The trick below works because it forces Photos to write a change to the face index. Once that write happens, the app re-evaluates the library and restarts scanning in the background — for every person, not only the one you edited.

Fixes to try

1. Nudge the face index with a review edit

This is the fix that reliably restarts indexing. Do it once, carefully, and then leave the phone alone.

  1. Open Photos > Albums > People & Pets and tap any person or pet that already appears.
  2. Tap the three-dot button in the top right, then tap the person’s name entry.
  3. Choose Review Photos Identified as [Name].
  4. Untick one photo. Just one is enough.
  5. Tap the checkmark in the top right to confirm. If the checkmark will not respond, tap the X in the top left instead — the change is still saved.
  6. Go back, open the same three-dot menu, and this time tap Review More Photos.

That last tap is the important one. It re-queues scanning across your whole library. On a large collection it can take a while — a library in the hundreds of thousands of photos can take a quarter of an hour or more before the counts start climbing.

If Review More Photos does not appear, or nothing changes after a few minutes, repeat steps 1–5, then force quit Photos (swipe up from the bottom of the screen and flick the Photos card away) and open it again before trying step 6.

2. Give the scanner the conditions it needs

Indexing will not run while you are using the phone. It needs the right window.

  1. Plug the iPhone into power.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and turn off Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode if it is on.
  3. Lock the phone and leave it. Overnight is ideal.
  4. In the morning, open Photos > Albums > People & Pets and check whether the number of named people has grown.

Repeat this for two or three nights. Large libraries are scanned in chunks, and each night picks up where the last one stopped.

3. Check that iCloud Photos has finished syncing

If your library is still uploading or downloading, the scanner has nothing stable to work with.

  1. Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and confirm Sync this iPhone is on.
  2. Open the Photos app, go to the Library tab and scroll to the very bottom. Read the status line — it should say the library is up to date, not that items are uploading or downloading.
  3. If it is still syncing, leave the phone on Wi-Fi and charging until it finishes, then try Fix 1 again.

Also check free space in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Face indexing needs working room; a phone that is completely full will quietly skip background work.

4. Restart the phone, then retry the review trick

A plain restart clears the background task scheduler, which is often where the stall lives.

  1. Turn the iPhone off and back on.
  2. Unlock it once so Photos can open its library.
  3. Plug in, connect to Wi-Fi, and leave it locked for an hour.
  4. Open People & Pets and check the counts.
  5. If nothing has changed, run Fix 1 again from the top.

5. Reset settings as a last resort

If the album is still empty after several nights of charging, the index itself may be corrupt. Resetting all settings does not delete photos, but it does clear Wi-Fi passwords, wallpapers, and privacy permissions, so treat it as a last step.

  1. Make a backup first — to iCloud or to a Mac.
  2. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  3. Set the phone up again, plug it in, and leave it locked overnight.
  4. Open Photos and let it rebuild. This can take considerably longer than a normal scan.

If nothing works

If the People & Pets album is still empty or badly incomplete after a week of nightly charging, stop troubleshooting and get the library looked at. Book a session at an Apple Store or contact Apple Support — a Genius Bar can run diagnostics on the photo library that you cannot run yourself.

Before any restore or repair, make sure you have a full backup. If you use iCloud Photos, confirm the library is fully synced and visible at iCloud.com before you let anyone touch the device. A restore from a backup that was taken while the index was already broken will simply bring the broken index back.

It is also worth waiting for the next iOS update. Face indexing has been reworked more than once, and a point release can rebuild the index on its own after installation.

FAQ

How long should face indexing take?

There is no fixed number. A few thousand photos can be done in an evening; a library in the hundreds of thousands can take many hours spread across several nights of charging. The scan only runs while the phone is locked and powered, so the wall-clock time is much longer than the actual processing time.

Why does my new iPhone recognise fewer faces than my old one?

Counts rarely match exactly. The scanner works from the photos present on the device, and a new phone may still be downloading originals from iCloud. Once the library is fully synced and indexing has run to completion, the numbers usually converge. Small differences are normal and not a fault.

Does face scanning upload my photos to Apple?

No. The People & Pets index is built on the device. Photo data is not sent to Apple for face recognition. The only thing that syncs is the resulting index, so your other devices can show the same named people without rescanning everything.

Can I delete a wrongly matched face?

Yes. Open the person in People & Pets, tap the three-dot button, and remove the photo from that person. It will not reappear there, though the same face may be suggested again if the scanner finds a strong match elsewhere in the library.
