Online sales for Black Friday reportedly fell for the first time ever

Online sales for Black Friday tend to grow more every year as people do better shopping from home, but not this time. Adobe estimates that combined online sales for Black Friday and Thanksgiving recorded their first overall decline from the previous year 2021, falling from $ 9 billion in 2020 to $ 8.9 billion. It’s not a catastrophic drop, but Adobe saw it as a sign of changing trends.

The technology firm believes the decline reflected a shift toward earlier purchases as customers took advantage of online offerings starting as early as October. Why buy in one day when you can take advantage of discounts weeks in advance? Although Adobe expected higher spending on cyber Monday (between $ 10.2 billion and $ 11.3 billion), its data suggests that the shopping frenzy this year wasn’t that strong.

The products people bought changed as the weekend progressed. Black Friday sales were dominated by Instant pots, fryers and toys, but Saturday sales were led by technology that included AirPods, entry-level iPads, Meta Quest 2 and TVs like Samsung, TCL and Vision. Game sales included Just Dance 2022 and last year Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Adobe also noted that more people were pleased to make the final purchase from their phones. While some Black Friday shoppers only browsed on their phones before shopping on a computer (62.2 percent of all visits were from mobile devices), mobile phone purchases accounted for 44.4 percent of all Black Friday online sales, which is a jump of 10.6 percent compared to 2020. Don’t be surprised if many people never touch a computer for holiday shopping in the years ahead.
