Mercedes ’electric delivery van concept cleans the surrounding air

Mercedes is using the upcoming COP26 climate conference to highlight its efforts in terms of electric vehicles – and to show how sustainability can involve more than switching to battery power. The newly introduced Sustaineer delivery van concept is fully electric, as you might expect, but it also improves the environment around it. Fine particle filters on the front and bottom purify the air around the van regardless of speed. It even uses cast iron discs with a ceramic coating that reduce the amount of dust in the air and limit brake wear.

Sustaineer also has solar panels on its roof to extend the range and reduce the need for charging via a connector (this sometimes contributes to CO2 emissions). It can additionally power devices whether the van works or not, such as tools and laptops. Solar energy on electrified vehicles is nothing new, but Mercedes clearly hopes that implementations like this will keep EV vehicles as green as possible.

Other environmentally conscious technology includes an energy-saving heating system that attaches to the body (including a seat belt) and extensive use of recycled materials. The filler is made from household waste, the cabin partition is made from natural straw, and the chassis includes recycled polypropylene and used tires. Mercedes also reduces noise pollution thanks to quiet electric drive, low rolling resistance tires and muffled automatic delivery doors.

Security is also a concern. The camera monitors road conditions to share reports of potholes and other hazards with cities, while digital mirrors provide a clearer field of view than you normally have with cargo vans. The “biologically active” light keeps the driver awake by filling the cab with daylight-like lighting while maintaining a natural rhythm.

There are no mentions of plans for mass production of Sustainer. In addition, Mercedes emphasized that all the van technology was made with large production in mind. You can see this in other vans, not to mention other Mercedes vehicles. The company already has other green technologies on the horizon, such as sustainable EV battery repairs in 2022, and Sustaineer is ultimately a logical continuation of those plans.
