MediaTek Dimensity 9000: A platform for high-end smartphones

MediaTek is the first company to announce a processor built on it TSMC is 4nm semiconductor process. New processes allow chipmakers to pack more computing power into a given amount of space and are usually faster and more energy efficient.

At the heart of this system on a chip (SoC), there is a powerful heterogeneous CPU cluster that includes Ultra, Super and Efficiency cores in MediaTek terminology. As the names suggest, each core type has different characteristics of speed and power. The cluster scheduler and OS thread scheduler work in tandem to automatically schedule work on the most appropriate core type.

Heterogeneous CPU clusters are not a new concept, but this implementation is exciting one ARM Cortex X2 core as “Ultra” core, three Cortex A710 “Super” core, and four Cortex A510 core for “efficiency”.

These are all modern CPU core designs that should bring noticeably higher performance and energy efficiency across the board. If nothing else, I expect more SoC manufacturers to adopt these new CPU cores, and we’ll have to see if some of them have custom versions at all. For now, MediaTek’s CPU cluster looks really good.


CPU cores access fast LPDDR5 RAM, which offers great potential if OEMs opt for the highest supported type of memory. There is a giant 14MB total CPU cache memory to stay on the chip as much as possible.

The graphics processor is ARM Small G710, GPU design released in May 2021. On paper it should bring a 20% increase in graphics and 35% for GPU-based machine learning applications. Overall, the architecture should provide 20% energy efficiency.


The small G710 also has one hardware air monitoring (RT), which might be interesting from a developer’s point of view. For consumers, it remains to be seen what kind of air monitoring performance this GPU can achieve (in beams / second) and the quality of RT denoising, two critical points for practical hardware air monitoring.

RT speed determines what game developers do with it and how it will eventually penetrate games. In the short term, legacy rasterization rendering performance remains the most critical metric to look at.

This graphics processor supports a Refresh rate 180Hz, and maybe it’s a hint of where the screens will take place. But this could also be handy for games and VR applications, especially since the G710 has a new architecture change to reduce internal latency.

The Dimensity 9000 image signal processor (ISP) can be switched 9 billion pixels per second and could support a 320MP camera. The 320MP number should not be taken literally, but multi-camera recording is today a “case of use in the real world”.


Simultaneous shooting with all phone cameras (rear, ultra wide, zoom, selfie) is very convenient for content creators. The high-speed ISP makes this possible with maximum quality. The noise reduction with three exposures the technique MediaTek talked about is one of the better things that can be done on the software side of photography.

Interestingly, the ISP and APU (AI processor) have access to the same memory. Therefore, the APU can process images efficiently, which opens the door to more computing and image filtering. This is especially true because the new APU is 4x faster than the previous generation.


Dimension 9000 is integrated 5G modem is built on 5G NR 3GPP Issue 16 specifications. There are many improvements for networks and operators to make the transition from 4G to 5G easier.

5G features such as updated MIMO protocols and 5G NR unlicensed in release 16 will increase network speed and capacity and bring better average network experience for all users. Of course, the network should work on release 16, but owning a compatible device is a way to be sure of your purchase in the future.

Dimensity 9000 supports Wi-Fi 6E i Bluetooth 5.3, the latest enhancement to the popular BT protocol. From a consumer perspective, Bluetooth enhancements are primarily in the background. However, efficiency and optimization may have little effect on battery life.

All in all, the new MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is the right “Flagship” platform with which MediaTek will compete at the very top. This is the culmination of the Dimensity product line and we look forward to seeing the first devices coming to market.

MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai and its executives joined the launch event via video (from Taiwan) and presented an excellent overview of progress over the past few years, and looking back, the Dimensity family has climbed every level to the top.

During the question and answer session, some asked what he thought about the NVIDIA acquisition of ARM. He replied that he believed that “the capabilities of the CPU and GPU would be further enhanced with NVIDIA technology,” and that was a “positive” thing.
