I rarely share photos of my family – and more specifically, my daughter – online. I believe that she should have the right to choose if, and when her face is shared online.
This means that I typically only share photos with her face cropped out, or I resort to clunky editing processes to obscure her face. With the brand new app MaskerAid, now hiding her face can be done instantly.
Hide faces in photos with MaskerAid
It’s not often that I find an app that feels truly purpose-built to match my sensibilities. When it comes to MaskerAid, it turns out the app’s creator (podcaster and developer Casey Liss) built an app just for parents just like me.
The inspiration, according to Liss, was simple. “I really really wanted an app that would let me quickly hide the faces of my children, so I could post family pictures to the internet, but keep their faces private.”
Instantly detect and hide face
Using MaskerAid is almost entirely effortless. Simply launch the app, select a photo, and MaskerAid covers the faces in your photos with the 🙂 emoji. And it’s all thanks to machine learning. From there, you can make tweaks to the size or placement, remove an emoji from some of the faces, or even swap out the emoji for a different one (unlocked via in-app purchase). All in just a few taps.
Once you’re done, you can safely share the image to your favorite messaging or social platform, or save it to your photo library. It truly is one of the most useful photo-editing apps I have ever used.
And that is truly how simple it is. No more using the text boxes in the Markup feature of the Photos app to cover faces. No more opening a photo in Pixelmator so I can drop an emoji on the display. And definitely no need to rely on Snapchat or Instagram as a photo markup tool – something I have seen done by others many times before.
Perfect for parents like me
Instead, you get a dedicated app to help you mask faces in photos before sharing them. It’s perfect for parents who want to keep their kids anonymous online. Or for anybody else with that same desire for privacy.
MaskerAid is available for free in the App Store. You can unlock the entire iOS emoji selection for a $ 2.99 in-app purchase.
If you’ve ever found yourself wanting to share a photo online, but would like to hide or obscure some of the faces in it, give MaskerAid a try.
Price: Free (with a $ 2.99 in-app purchase to unlock all emoji)
