macOS Monterey: Here are features exclusive to M1 Macs

macOS Monterey was introduced during the introductory speech of WWDC21 with a redesigned Safari, universal control function and others. Although Apple didn’t point them out, several new features are only available on M1 Macs, and Intel users won’t be able to take advantage of that. Read on as we round them out.

When Apple switched from PowerPC to Intel, the company quickly gave up support for older Macs. As Apple is in the midst of a transition from Intel to its own silicon, the company still supports many Intel Macs.

With another major software update used by Apple Silicon, here are features introduced by Apple that will only be available to its proprietary Macs.

Portrait mode on FaceTime: Only M1 Macs on macOS Monterey will be able to blur the background of a video call using FaceTime.

Live text in photos: It gives users the ability to interact with text in photos, such as copying and pasting, searching and translating. Live Text will work in Photos, Screenshots, Quick View and Safari.

Maps: An interactive globe and a detailed new city experience will only be available on M1 MacOS Monterey computers. With these two features, users will be able to interact with the 3D globe and explore cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and London with details of altitude, roads, trees, buildings, landmarks and more.

Object recording: With macOS Monterey, users will be able to convert a series of 2D images into a photo-realistic 3D object that is optimized for AR in just minutes using the power of a Mac.

Siri: Multi-language text-to-speech neural voice is only available for M1 Macs. In addition to macOS Monterey, this feature will be available in several languages: Swedish (Sweden), Danish (Denmark), Norwegian (Norway) and Finnish (Finland).

Dictation on the device: Keyboard dictation protects user privacy by performing all processing completely offline. With macOS Monterey, users can dictate texts of any length without a time limit.

Since we are still on beta 1 version of macOS 12 Monterey, Apple could change the availability of features and which Macs it will work with.
