A new report shows that Mac shipments in 2021 grew almost twice as fast as the PC market as a whole. Annual growth for the Mac was 28.3%, compared to 14.6% in the global PC market.
The impressive result is, of course, strongly boosted by the sale of the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro, which went on sale in October…
Canalys says the growth of the PC market as a whole has been remarkable in itself, given that it followed the 2020 progress caused by COVID-19.
The PC market ended in 2021 with a bang, as deliveries in the fourth quarter exceeded 90 million for the second year in a row. The latest Canalys data shows that global shipments of desktops, laptops and workstations rose 1% year-on-year to 92 million units over 91 million a year ago.
This led to an increase in total deliveries for the whole of 2021 to 341 million units, 15% more than last year, 27% more than 2019 and the highest total delivery since 2012. Furthermore, the industry recorded strong revenue growth, total value in Q4 deliveries estimated at $ 70 billion, an annual increase of 11% over Q4 2020. For the full year, revenue exceeded $ 250 billion in 2021 from $ 220 billion in 2020, an increase of 15%, highlighting seismic transformation in industry.
The two-year combined annual growth rate of 13% since 2019 emphasizes how dramatically the importance of computers has increased since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Laptops and mobile workstations continued to lead, with shipments of these devices growing by 16% in 2021 to 275 million units. Deliveries of desktop and desktop workstations increased by 7% in 2021 to 66 million units.
„2021. was a turning point in the history of the PC market, with the place of computers at the center of work, study and leisure being truly cemented, ”said Ishan Dutt, senior analyst at Canalys. “For the market to grow in double digits during the impressive 2020, despite the constant cloud of supply constraints, it speaks volumes about how strong the demand for computers has been in the last 12 months.”
Dutt continued: “Looking at the long term, the most important developments in 2021 were the large increases in penetration and computer usage rates. Computers are now in the hands of both young students and older family members, while owning two or more computers per person is increasingly common in developed markets. Since the beginning of the pandemic, new additions to the installed base, rather than replacement devices, have been higher than the normal share of delivered computers, especially in areas such as education and teleworking. This has set the stage for continued success for the PC industry as there is no going back from how much they are embedded in our daily lives. ”
Apple recorded growth in annual Mac shipments from 22,574,000 in 2020 to 28,958,000 in 2021.
