Mac sales in India tripled after the opening of the online Apple Store

Mac sales in India have more than tripled year after year after Apple was finally allowed to open an online store in the country.

This made Apple the fifth largest computer brand in the country since the first quarter of 2021 …

Digitimes reports.

Apple became the fifth largest PC brand in India in the first quarter of 2021, and shipments of desktops, laptops, tablets and workstations together reached 208,000 units, according to Canalys.

Canalys pointed out that the significant increase in shipments of Apple laptops and tablets in India was mainly due to Apple opening its online store in September 2020.

Data from research firm IDC also shows that Apple computer shipments in India (excluding tablets) rose 335.5% year-on-year in the first quarter and lagged behind Asustek alone by about 2,000 units. Apple and Asustek are tied for the fifth place of the IDC ranking of computer brands in India this quarter.

CMR data also showed that Indian tablet shipments fell by 34% in a row in the first quarter of 2021, while Apple was the second largest tablet maker in the country with a 29% market share. Apple delivers its tablets by 144% per year, surpassing Samsung Electronics ’original second place. Of the 29% market share, 17pp comes from the iPad 8 and 9pp from the iPad Air 2020.

For many years, Apple wanted to open an online store in India, but the law prevented it. Foreign companies looking to run e-commerce websites of their own brands had to procure 30% of their production locally, which Apple could not do. However, the increase in iPhone production in the country has helped persuade the government to ease the demands.

Apple’s online store in India opened in September last year, followed by physical stores.

Apple’s vice president of Retail + People Deirdre O’Brien noted the expansion: “We are proud to be expanding in India and want to do everything we can to support our customers and their communities. We know that our customers rely on technology to stay connected, get involved in learning and use their creativity. By bringing the Apple Store online to India, we are offering our customers the best of Apple at this important time. ”

In May, custom Mac sales were opened by retailers in India ahead of the launch of the official online store. Tim Cook promised in February that the online store would open this year. Physical Apple stores will arrive in India in 2021, and one of the first locations is expected to be built at the Bandra Kurla complex in Mumbai.
