Mac gets SharePlay in macOS 12.1, but Universal Control is delayed again

macOS 12.1, the first major update for Monterey, came out on Monday. The main new feature is SharePlay, but there are some other improvements. But that does not include the long-awaited universal control.

It comes on the same day as iOS 15.2, iPadOS 15.2 and watchOS 8.3.

What’s new in macOS Monterey 12.1

Release Notes for the latest Mac update:

“MacOS Monterey 12.1 adds SharePlay, a whole new way to share experiences with family and friends in FaceTime. This update also includes the Apple Music Voice Plan, new security features for kids and parents in messaging, redesigned memories in photos, and other features and bug fixes for your Mac. ”

For those who have somehow missed out, SharePlay allows users to enjoy music, movies, TV shows, etc. together. during a FaceTime call. The feature was launched for iPhone and iPad a few weeks ago and is finally available for Mac as well.

The Apple Music Voice Plan announced in October makes streaming audio service more affordable for those who agree not to use buttons.

With macoS 12.1, Mac can detect if a user receives or send text with sexually explicit photos and will notify their parents. The goal is to protect children from sexual predators. This feature also debuted for the iPhone and iPad on Monday.

Universal control has been postponed again

Note that the notes on the release of macOS Monterey 12.1 do not mention Universal Control. When launched, this feature will allow a single keyboard to control both Mac and iPad, allowing users to easily switch between them.

Apple promised in October that Universal Control would be released “later this fall”, but did not give that deadline. On Monday, Cupertino gave a new deadline promising that the feature will be “available this spring”. That is almost a year since the first discovery. Comparisons to AirPower – an add-on that Apple announced but never released – are starting to grow.
