Mac App Store “An SSL error has occurred and the secure connection to the server cannot be established.”

Some Mac users find the App Store error when trying to download apps or update apps from the Mac App Store.

The error message says: “We couldn’t finish your purchase. An SSL error has occurred and the secure connection to the server could not be established. “

This problem is usually due to a connection problem between the Mac and the Apple server using the Mac App Store, although there are some other possible situations that can lead to an error message.

If you have a “SSL error” message when you try to download apps from the Mac App Store, try the following troubleshooting tips:

  • Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet and reliable, so a poor wi-fi connection can lead to connection errors
  • Check the Mac system clock and date and time to make sure they are set correctly. Incorrect date and time setting will lead to such SSL errors. Go to the Apple menu> System Settings> Date & Time> and make sure everything is correct.
  • Check the Apple Status page for any problems with the App Store offline
  • Wait a while (15 minutes), close and restart the Mac App Store, and try downloading / updating again

You may also see a different error message “Unable to download application. The application cannot be installed. Please try again later. “ when you try to update apps or download apps from the Mac App Store.

Unable to download app from Mac App Store error

This message also strongly implies that the problem is related to the Mac App Store connection, and to check if your Mac is connected to the Internet, just wait a bit and try again later.

Often, if the Mac App Store doesn’t work completely, you’ll find this information available on the Apple status page, along with the “I can’t connect to the App Store” error message on the Mac (and errors stating that I can’t connect to the App Store may appear on the iPhone or iPad as well), while SSL errors “can’t complete the purchase” and “unable to download app” errors are more likely due to temporary failures in the connection between the Mac and the App Store.

If you encounter any of these error messages when trying to download apps or updates from the Mac App Store and find another cause or solution, please share with us in the comments.
