Dark-mode fans are looking forward to it — today LinkedIn has finally jumped into the dark-mode train, launching an alternate display option in its mobile app and on the desktop.
As you can see here, the new dark mode offers an alternate color palette for the LinkedIn app, which both adds a different display, while also being easier on the eyes in low light situations.
Which is really the key goal of the dark mode tool. While many see them only as new skin on the regular user interface of their favorite apps, the real goal of the dark mode tool is limit exposure to blue light.
The blue light screen improves the readability of your device in daylight, but in low light situations, blue light can cause your brain to stop producing melatonin, which can lead to disturbed sleep cycles, making it harder to fall asleep.
And given that so many of us now check our phones in bed before we surrender at night, this is a significant concern – in fact, research shows thatSince 1985, the percentage of adults who sleep less than six hours a night has increased by 31%.
So it’s not just a new, cooler screen, though it is.
LinkedIn specifically notes that it focused on two key elements with the dark mode option.
- Accessibility – Dark mode meets accessibility standards, with color and contrast elements that help reduce eye strain and keep light sensitivity in mind. We have adjusted certain colors within the dark mode design to meet or exceed the color contrast ratios for better text readability and user interface control to adjust the overall contrast of the light to dark background.
- Inclusiveness – We also took this opportunity to present versions of our illustrations in dark mode that complement the dark mode experience. These illustrations span a wide range of industries and fields beyond technology and represent professionals of all abilities, enlivening our vibrant and diverse LinkedIn community.
LinkedIn also notes that the plugin is part of its broader effort to make its platform more inclusive and accessible, which also includes improved text scaling processes, optimal device orientation change, and updated page redesign, among other upgrades.
The add-on means that all major social apps now have or are testing dark mode options, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok and Pinterest.
So, if you prefer Darth Vader to Luke Skywalker or simply prefer proper sleep, you now have the option in almost all of your favorite social apps.
As of today, the dark mode of LinkedIn delivery is delivered to all users, without a definite time frame for full launch.
NOTE: LinkedIn also urges company site managers to check their brand logos in the new dark mode to make sure they appear as intended.
