Lenovo is refreshing the ThinkPad X1 series at CES

CES is a traditional time when Lenovo is resetting a significant part of its portfolio, and this is the case this year as well. The ThinkPad X1 series is one of the most popular, so we pay special attention to it, and this update is worth a look.

First, Lenovo is upgrading upcoming ThinkPad X1 laptops to Intel’s new 12th generation of “Alder Lake” Core processors (and chipsets) for mobile devices. Earlier, we talked about the Alder Lake architecture and reviewed desktop processors.

Some Intel Gen 12 mobile CPUs have just been unveiled at CES and will carry all the benefits of Intel’s latest architecture, including performance but, more importantly, energy efficiency. That means potentially much better battery life, and we expect reviews to show that later this year.

X1 Carbon 10 Gen, X1 Yoga 7th Gene and X1 Nano 2nd All generations get new Intel processors, which is quite exciting because they showed outstanding performance in 2021. If you’re not familiar with this great design, read our ThinkPad X1 Carbon 9th Generation Review, X1 Yoga 6th Review of generation and X1 nano 1st Gen review.

These new X1 laptops will have an Intel Core P-Series i U-series, which are processors of lower power than the H-series fully presented at CES 2022.

Aside from the CPU, another aspect of updating the system is the arrival DDR5 high performance memory and PCIe Gen 4. Both can deliver significant performance for memory and storage workloads.

Looking at the technical specifications, I like it 3K and 4K OLED screen options. Many IPS LCDs are great, but when it comes to image quality for entertainment, OLED is almost always the best option.

At the top of the screen, Lenovo uses a new camera module with a higher performance camera sensor. The 1.4 micron sensor pixel size is exciting as it could bring smartphone selfie quality to the laptop market. Lenovo is committed to having better video communication, and it is happening.

Speaking of cameras, the Lenovo ThinkShield security platform includes human presence detection that can detect if you have gone to lock your laptop. You can also be alerted if someone peeks at your screen from behind. It’s also intelligent enough to dim the screen if you’re looking away to save energy.

There are 4G CAT16 or 5G Sub-6 connectivity options for passengers. If you use a portable WiFi access point, I would recommend that you have integrated communications as they usually work much better and you won’t have to manage, carry and charge your access point.

We look forward to experiencing these new generation ThinkPad X1s in the real world. According to Lenovo, the new X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga will arrive around March with starting prices of $ 1,639 and $ 1,749, respectively. The new X1 Nano is expected to ship in April at a starting price of $ 1,659.
