One of the most surprising things Matrix Resurrections when it was first announced it was news to which Lilly Wachowski would not return directs the project together with his sister Lana, with whom she is wrote and directed the first three films. Although Lilly gave a blessing to her sister and the rest of the film’s creative team, she eventually decided not to return for the fourth installment for a number of reasons, including her exhausting work schedule.

In addition to her professional commitments, Lilly, who recently emerged as a transgender person, and the departure of both parents five weeks apart, also influenced her decision not to be a part of Resurrections. For Lilly, Resurrections it represented a significant part of her previous life to which she was not particularly interested in returning, which is more than understandable on multiple levels.

Since then, the Hollywood hype machine has been working hard and driving the public crazy Matrix Resurrectionspremiere this fall. The fact that this is the first Matrix which was not made by both brothers and sisters-creators dropped out of the news cycle. But the topic recently appeared in a circular fashion on this year Berlin International Literature Festival, where Lana Wachowski spoke at the screenplay panel.

Until Lana expanded on her sister’s reasons for switching from Matrix franchise, she talked about how the death of their parents also affected her feelings Resurrections and her decision to make Neo and Trinity the core of the new story.

“My brain was always going into my imagination and one night I was crying and I couldn’t sleep, and my brain exploded in this whole story,” Wachowski said. “And I couldn’t have my mom and dad, but all of a sudden I got Neu and Trinity, probably the two most important characters in my life.”

The Matrix of Revolution‘The first trailer shows a few glances at Nea (Keanu Reeves) inside the Matrix where she encounters Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), who apparently doesn’t remember him beyond the vague feeling of déjà vu when they first meet. While at least part of the past goes back to Trinity and Neo – who also doesn’t fully remember the events from previous films – the trailer definitely makes Resurrections it seemed like it might feel like a quiet restart with the intention of reminding the audience how it feels Matrix first time. For Lana Wachowski, the return of Neo and Trinity was both cathartic and healing.

“It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again, and it’s super simple,” Wachowski explained. You can look at it and say, ‘okay, these two people are dying and well, revive these two people and oh, isn’t that good?’ It is! It’s simple, and that’s what art does and that’s what stories do, they comfort us. ”

Matrix Resurrections to theaters and HBO Max arrives on December 22nd.
