Jason Segel will star in another original project for Apple.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Apple has placed a direct order for “Shrinking,” a new comedy series from the minds of Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein. The series, starring Segel, will also be written and executive produced by the trio.
The downsizing revolves around a grieving therapist (Segel) who starts breaking the rules and telling his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he makes big changes in people’s lives – including his own.
Segel is also still working on “The Sky Is Everywhere,” an upcoming feature film that will also debut on Apple’s streaming service. Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein are also known for their work on “Ted Lasso,” one of the most popular series on Apple TV +.
The comedy originates from Warner Bros. television, where Lawrence is under a long-term overall contract and is currently negotiating a new deal that reflects the success of the Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso, as well as its fast-growing stream, which includes Apple’s Bad Monkey, HBO’s Max class boss and tall clone. Top of Lawrence’s Doozer Productions Jeff Ingold is also the executive producer of Shrinking with Lisa Katzer as a co-EP. Lawrence is with ICM partners and attorney Jared Levine.
Goldstein, who won an Emmy for his role as Roy Kent in the Ted Lasso film, also recently negotiated a contract with the Warners and secured a significant pay raise for both his acting services and for working as a writer in a comedy run by Jason Sudeikis. He started in the room of writers Ted Lass before being eavesdropped on to play Roy. (Goldstein described the trip in detail in a July interview with TV Top 5.) Goldstein, a longtime Lawrence friend who shares a love for Muppets with Segel, is also looking forward to creating and writing duties for AMC’s Soulmates. Goldstein isn’t expected to star in Shrinking, though if Ted Lasso finishes his third season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to change that. They are represented by Mosaic, B-Side Management and LARK.
