Instagram really cares about making people use Reels as much as possible, as it works against the rise of TikTok, while at the same time aligning with growing usage trends.
The latest development on this front comes in the form of a new oneInstallation‘, which is currently being tested internally, which would allow users to convert the Instagram Stories frame to short Reel videos.
As you can see in this example, the app explorer shared Alessandro Paluzzi, a new process would allow you to merge your Stories frames into Clip Reels.
The first step, as shown above, would show all your story frames in sequence. From there, you would allow Instagram to automatically formulate the video by combining elements of each frame.
In the final stage, Instagram would recommend audio to go along with your new Reels clip, which would automatically sync with the transitions it created.
It’s a pretty logical tool that looks simple, and its real usefulness comes down to how it actually formulates clips and how it converts elements from your stories into reels.
While it’s a bit strange to see Instagram trying to merge the two functionalities on the one hand, and discourage the same on the other, the platform still works in ways to prevent users from sharing regular posts on feeds in Stories again.
The latest update on this front comes in the form of a “Re-share” label, which allows users to more creatively share posts from feed stories.
Instagram experimented with blocking resharing of posts from feeds to Stories and other options, with platform executives constantly pointing out that while users may want to re-share their posts on feeds with Stories, their audiences don’t want to see them.
Still, Instagram is openly and actively looking for ways to get users to re-share Stories on Reels. It seems that this could be just as annoying for users, if implemented, given that you will see duplicate content from the profiles you follow.
It may not be the same if the content is mixed into the Reels format – or Instagram may be so eager to encourage the use of Reels, however it may be, that it will take a risk and move forward with any option to increase Reels content.
It’s hard to know what the real motive is here. Instagram says drum consumption is growing fast, but it’s still a long way from TikTok, and as TikTok continues to dominate the download charts, this poses a potentially existential threat to IG, especially as younger users increasingly adapt to TikTok.
This, in essence, happened with MySpace, with the advent of Facebook which gained a resonance among younger audiences, which over time became more widely used and killed MySpace forever. For Instagram, it’s still far from that level, but such trends are important in this context – so it makes sense for Instagram to look for more options, as it seeks to stifle user migrations wherever it can.
And no matter how you look at it, it helps. Many Instagram users can now get their TikTok app for in-app fixes, which probably prevented many of them from switching, increasing Instagram usage time. So, even if copying procedures on Instagram may seem a bit bold, there is a method here, and as more and more users adapt to short-form video content, Instagram should strive to align with it where it can.
On the other hand, also spotted by Paluzzi, Instagram is experimenting with the newFavorites‘an audience selection tool, which, like Facebook Favorites, will allow users to select specific profiles whose posts will then be given higher priority in your feed.
As some have noted, Instagram algorithms should already know which profiles are your favorite, based on your interactions in the past, but as with Facebook, this option would give users another way to control what is displayed to them, more explicitly, in their summary, which would somewhat override the algorithm and ensure you see the latest posts from the people who matter most to you.
Indeed, it is a measure to put more control in the hands of users, which people keep repeating they want. Whether they really do that and whether they would really use it is a completely different question.
Either way, it could provide another way to manage your Instagram profiles and ensure you see the latest posts from your family and friends
