The Blue Origin rocket company, founded by Jeff Bezos, is scheduled to perform its second manned suborbital flight on Wednesday morning. William Shatner comes for a ride, which only suits the actor who played Captain Kirk in Star Trek. Here’s how you can watch the launch.
The NS-18 Blue Origin flight is scheduled to take off on Wednesday, October 13 at 8:30 am EDT (13:30 UTC) from the One launch site in West Texas. The launch was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but strong winds moved the date one day forward.
Live launch sources will be available on Blue Origin Web page and on the Blue Origin YouTube channel. We will post the feed live here as soon as it becomes available. Coverage is expected to begin approximately 90 minutes before launch.
If all went according to plan, Shatner, 90, would become the oldest person to travel into space, even for just a few minutes. The current record belongs to 82-year-old Wally Funk, who set the mark earlier this year during the same flight that took Jeff Bezos into space. NASA astronaut John Glenn was said to have flown into space on a space shuttle at age 77, making him the oldest astronaut according to the FAA. definition term (tl; dr: to be an astronaut you actually have to to something while you are in space other than looking into the view).
After it was announced that Shatner was joining the NS-18 flight, the actor admitted that he was terrified. Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Shatner he said now he feels “comfortable, but also a little uncomfortable.” The years, he said, will not be a factor, except that you have to get in and out of the seat before and after the launch.
“So unless you’re really pliable, getting in and out of the seat … while we’re in gravity is nauseating,” Shatner said. “But of course it’s designed [for us] float out of the seat, in a weightless state. “Shatner is most happy that he is weightless, because after that” everything should be fine “. He added: “And we will have that moment of inspiration, which I feel will be there when we look into the vastness of the universe.”
After a few minutes of weightlessness, Shatner and his crew members will return to their seats and buckle up in preparation for re-entry. The capsule will descend with the help of a parachute and land softly in the desert. The whole thing won’t take longer than 15 minutes.
The NS-18 should only be the second flight of the New Shepard crew. On July 20, Blue Origin successfully sent company founder Jeff Bezos, along with three others, off the Karman line – the threshold of space toward the International Aviation Federation. Flying at a maximum altitude of 106 km, Shatner will be joined by Chris Boshuizen, a former NASA engineer and co-founder of Planet Labs, Glen de Vries, vice president life and health sciences at French software company Dassault Systèmes, and Audrey Powers, vice president of Blue Origin for flight missions and operations and a former flight controller at NASA.
Bezosu flight Shatner serves as a timely nuisance. Blue origin it was recently accused fostering sexism in the workplace and pushing employees to their limits. Claims that the company favored a quick deployment due to security concerns have has now led to an FAA investigation. Blue Origin is also included legal battle with NASA on a contract to land on the Moon that the company believes was unfairly awarded to SpaceX.
