How to use the iOS 15.2 Beta Application Privacy Report

Apple introduced the App Privacy Report in iOS 15.2 beta, a feature first shown at WWDC. The Application Privacy Report is designed to provide users with information about how often applications access sensitive information given to them through privacy permissions, such as location, contacts, camera, microphone, and photos.

Apple also displays network activity, letting you know which application domains they are contacting in the background.

How to turn on the Application Privacy Report

The application privacy report can be enabled in the Settings application by following these instructions.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Privacy.
  3. In the Application Privacy Settings section, scroll down and tap Application Privacy Report. Include an application privacy report
  4. Touch Turn on app privacy report.

If you already had the “Record application activity” option enabled in iOS 15 / iOS 15.1 updates, the Application Privacy Report will automatically turn on and will already be populated with data. If you haven’t, you may need to use apps and websites for a few minutes before you start seeing data.

Use of the application privacy report

Apple displays data from the past seven days, and the app is divided into several sections to help you get to what you want to know.

Access to data and sensors

In this section, Apple provides a list of applications that have accessed the sensors and data assigned to them through privacy permissions, that is, your most sensitive information.

Access to data and sensors will tell you when applications have accessed the following:

  • Contacts
  • Location
  • Photos
  • Camera
  • Microphone
  • Media Library

If you tap an individual app and then tap the permission you want to see more about, App Privacy Report will give you a list each time the app accessed that data.

Network application activity

With Application Network Activity, you can see a list of all the different domains that your applications have contacted in the last seven days.

This includes the various internal domains used by the applications, but also allows you to see which third-party sites and services are being accessed, such as tracking or analytics tools.

You can tap any application in the list to see an overview of all the domains you have contacted. If you have Instagram installed, for example, you’ll see URLs for things like DoubleClock, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and more, along with internal Instagram and Facebook URLs.

At the bottom of each app’s data, you can also get a list of sites you’ve visited within the app.

Network activity of the website

The network activity of the site is basically identical to the activity of the application network, but it shows you all the domains that contact the websites you have visited in Safari and other applications.

This will show you all the different tracking and analytics pages that the websites use.

Most frequently contacted domains

The most frequently contacted domains is a summary list of domains most frequently contacted by applications, and is usually populated with various domains for tracking and analytics.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Privacy.
  3. In the Application Privacy Settings section, scroll down and tap Application Privacy Report.
  4. Touch Turn off app privacy report.

Note that disabling the app’s privacy report will delete all collected data. When it is turned on again, Apple will start collecting data from applications again.
