How to use mentions in messages for Mac

As a Mac iMessage user, how often did you want to mention or tag other members of a group chat? You’re certainly not alone, and just like you can mention people in messages on your iPhone and iPad, you can do the same on a Mac and start pinging people right away.

The ability to use Mentions in Messages for Mac is only available on the latest versions of the system software, so make sure you’re using Big Sur or later to have that feature.

Make sure your Mac is running at least macOS Big Sur or later because it’s not available on older versions. When you’re done, just follow the steps below:

  1. Launch the standard Messages app and open a group chat. Now start typing @ followed by the name of the group member. Observe the text carefully.

  2. As soon as you finish typing the name, the text changes color from white to gray. This confirms that it is a valid mention. Click on the mention and you will see an additional pop-up window with the contact’s name, as shown in the screenshot below.

Disable mention notifications in iMessage for Mac

Remember that others in the group can also mention and ping your devices. If things get out of hand, you may want to temporarily disable mention notifications. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Assuming the Messages app is already open, go to Messages -> Preferences from the menu bar.

Note that this particular notification setting will only be helpful if you have already muted the group chat. If you haven’t already done so, feel free to learn how to turn off the conversation sound in Messages for Mac.

We would like to point out that this is a global environment at the time of writing. Therefore, if you want to receive mention notifications from a particular excluded group chat, you’re out of luck. Let’s just hope Apple solves this minor problem in future iterations of macOS.
