How to set up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe multiplayer

Source: iMore

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch. There are dozens of characters to choose from, but you’ll have to play a few times to unlock everything in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, including characters, go-karts, tires and sailboats. If you’re setting up a multiplayer race to compete with your friends for the first time, here are a few things to help you know how to set up a Mario Kart multiplayer.

Keep in mind that although the game can accommodate up to four people locally or eight people online, each will need its own Switch controller to play.

How to connect your controllers

After selecting the type of multiplayer race – Grand Prix, Vs. Race or battle – you will have to choose the controllers to use to play the game.

Fortunately, your Switch will automatically check the type of controller you use to play multiplayer games. Whether you have two, three or four players, you will be asked to register each controller by pressing the R and L buttons simultaneously. If you are using Pro controllers or Joy-Con Grips, press the L and R buttons on your shoulder at the same time.

If you are using a split Joy-Con – one person uses the left controller and the other the right – press the side keys SL and SR (which will be oriented to the top when you hold the Joy-Con in a horizontal position).

Have each player confirm their controller before proceeding to select their characters, cards, and track.

Three different multiplayer modes

You can choose from three different multiplayer modes: Grand Prix, Vs. Race and battle. Each offers a different type of gameplay, and each type has options for the type of experience you have.

1. Grand Prize

Choose between 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, 200cc or Mirror. “cc” means how fast your go-kart can go. If you’re new to the game, dial 50cc until you’re experienced enough to move on. It’s all backwards and upside down in Mirror racing, which is very disorienting, but a lot of fun, especially if you’re too familiar with a particular track.

2. Vs. Race

In Vs. Race, you can adjust the rules. You have the same cc speed options, plus a Mirror track, but you can also choose whether you and the others play as a team or for free for everyone. You can also choose the type of items that can be collected in the game: no items, no items or coins, crazy items, normal items, just shells, just bananas, just mushrooms, or just bob-ombos. You can choose which COM level maps can be non-COM, or light, medium or heavy. You can also limit the COM vehicle type to karting only or bicycles only.

When it comes to choosing courses for full Vs. Race, you can choose them yourself, randomly generate them or play in order. Finally, you can play four, six, eight, 12, 16, 24, 32 or 48 races. If you are planning to have a very long racing session with your friends, you will need a pit stop before you finish all 48 races.

3. Battle

In combat mode, you can choose a battle style, from glitter thief, random battle, balloon battle, outlaw gathering, bob-ombo explosion or coin runner. You can also select the same customizable options as in Vs. Race, with the addition of rounds of time for everything but the Battle of Shine Thief.

  • Shine Thief: A special star, or glow, is somewhere on the map. The goal is to get him and play to stay away from other players until time runs out. Hitting any player in Shine’s possession makes him a loss. Just run into it to pick it up and then avoid the other players.
  • Balloon Battle: Each player has balloons tied to their card. Every time a player is hit by another player, he loses the balloon. The winner is the last one standing with at least one balloon.
  • Renegade Roundup: This is basically a game of cops and robbers. Some players have Piranha plants attached to their cards. If he approaches a player who does not have him, the victim will be swallowed and locked up. However, those without the carnivorous plant can get their friends out of prison by pressing a button somewhere on the map. The game ends when all players without plants are trapped or if time runs out.
  • Bob-omb explosion: This is similar to a balloon battle, except that the only items players can get out of the item boxes are Bob-ombs. Throw explosives at other players until only one remains standing.
  • Coin Runners: Coins are scattered all over the track, and the player who collects the most on time wins. But be warned, every time you are hit, you will lose coins.
  • Random Battle: The game will randomly select one of the five games listed above.

After selecting the race type and adjusting your options, press office, and you are ready to play.
