How to make money on TikTok: 4 simple strategies

Maybe it’s your entrepreneurial spirit. You may have heard of Tesla’s Model X 20-year-old Addison Rae. Maybe you got that “screen time” notification (the one where your phone passively tells you you’re addicted to the internet) and said, “Hey, you could cash this in well.”

Either way, welcome. Here’s how to make money on TikTok.

TikTok is the seventh most used social media in the world, with 689 million active users since January 2021. It is a large market.

Many people have already figured out a way to make money on TikTok, and some consider it a full-time job. Here are the best strategies for making money on the application.

Can you make money on TikTok?

The short answer is: Yes, you can make money on TikTok.

But just like painting a picture or determining the status of a relationship with an ex-ex, making money on TikTok requires a little creativity. While there are official app-funded money-making methods (see Strategy # 4 below), there are many other ways you can make money on the platform — even if you don’t have a bunch of followers.

Similar to social media creators active on other platforms, many TikTok users have already achieved financial success through the app. And while TikTok may seem like a new frontier, the strategies you can use to make money are likely to look familiar (see our earning guides on Instagram and Youtube).

How much money can you make on TikTok?

The statistics for the best-earned TikTokers (TikTokers? TikTokians?) Stars are pretty staggering.

As is the case with celebrities and small volcanoes, most of TikTok’s best paid young people are also hot. So, is all hope lost when you reach a higher status in the app – that’s 25 years or more -? Of course not.

In almost every category, smart people use small videos to make big money.

So, blue-sky, a successful TikTok profile can give you a lifetime — but even if you don’t have millions of followers and billions of likes, you can still use it to make money.

4 ways to make money on TikTok

Strategy 1: Partner with a brand you trust

Sponsored content on TikTok is defined as content for which you get something valuable. That’s the goal, isn’t it? For example, a brand might pay you to make a TikTok that talks about how great their soy candles smell, or you could get a free parachute ride in exchange for posting about it. (Although we do not recommend free parachuting offers).

Brands are very interested in entering into such paid collaborations. An influencer marketing study found that in December 2019, 16% of U.S. marketers planned to use TikTok for impact campaigns – but in March 2021, that number climbed to 68%. In other words, influencer marketing is rising to the platform.

According to the same eMarketer study, companies want to work with people who have followers who know and trust them, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing social justice movements.

Which brings us to an important point: don’t look for partnerships with companies whose views don’t agree with yours. Your followers may care about your inspirational metaphors for soup or how many languages you can speak or about manicure, but they also care about your ethics.

Here are some tips to get you started using sponsored content:

Only contact the brands or organizations you really like

If your TikTok is just about your raw vegan trip and you suddenly start posting about your favorite local burger, your followers will see you. Not only is this confusing, but it also makes you look like a sale. So make sure your sponsored content is consistent with your regular content.

Make printing accessories for your account

The printing set is the announcement of the film for you. It encourages all the great things about you (and gives brands good reasons to work with you) and includes contact information, photos, and notable accomplishments. Make them want to see what happens next, with a bag of popcorn in their hands. Websites like Templatelab offer free templates for print kits.

Create several non-sponsored posts

Brands will want to see that you have everything you need to drive sales to their business. If you post a few (non-sponsored) posts in which you will tell your favorite pair of shoes, it is more likely that this elusive brand of special socks will want to work with you.

Use the switch for brand content

People don’t like to be fooled – and it turns out that apps don’t like it either. Tiktok created the Branded Content switch to make sure users are transparent. If you’re posting sponsored content, press the button (or risk removing the video).

Strategy 2: Partner with the influencer

This is the reverse of the first strategy. If you are an established company that wants to increase its presence (and make money) on TikTok, contact an influencer whose content is aligned with your brand.

Fashionista Wisdom Kaye recently teamed up with perfume company Maison Margiela in this TikTok, and food blogger Tiffy Chen in partnership with Robin Hood (flour, not fox) in this:

According to a Thomson study, every dollar spent on impact marketing brought in an average of $ 6.50 for business, and the top 13% of respondents reported an income of $ 20. Moreover, half of marketing experts say that customers gained by marketing influence were of better quality than customers brought in through other channels, such as email marketing or organic search.

In conclusion: influencers, well, influence. Effective.

If you are in the US, you can use TikTok Creator Marketplace to find the right influencer for you. The marketplace website connects brands with influencers. Any brand can join, but is only available to influencers by invitation (for now).

Outside the U.S. and TikTok approved markets, look for hashtags that are consistent with you and your business (#dentist, #faintinggoats, #thrifting) and scroll through the content. Or just explore the app, like the videos you like and ignore (or click “I don’t care”) the ones you don’t like. The app will start showing you what you want to see. It’s awfully smart like that.

Take the time to study each creator’s page — we’ve all heard the age-old story of suppressing influence over non-apology without racism. Stay away from problematic TickTokers. It’s 2021.

Strategy 3: Use Tiktok to advertise your products

If you have already established goods, this is the most obvious way to make money: create TikToks that displays your products, including all the details that make them unique. Be sure to include a link to your store in your resume.

Here’s a great example – fashion brand Klassy Network shows how to wear “brami”.

You can also create your own, personalized merchandise, like Italian Greyhound (and proud gay icon) Tike Iggy. The dog’s owner, Thomas Shapiro, sells Tika clothing online. Makeup brands like Fenty Beauty and Cocokind are also killing the game with merchandise.

Strategy 4: Apply to the TikTok Creator Fund

This is a method of making money approved by the application we talked about earlier. On July 22, 2020, TickTock announced its new Creator Fund, promising to give $ 200 million to “encourage those who dream of using their voice and creativity to foster an inspiring career.”

The Internet – and the world – ate it, and just a week later they announced that the fund would grow to $ 1 billion by 2023. So how do you get that sweet cash of the creator? The application has several boxes that you must check in order to log in:

  • Be located in the US, UK, France, Germany, Spain or Italy
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have at least 10,000 followers
  • Have at least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days
  • Have an account that adheres to the TikTok Community Guidelines and Terms of Service

You can sign up for the Creator Fund app via the app – as long as you have TikTok Pro (the best things in life are not free).

Tips for paying on TikTok

Be authentic

If a big book on social media was a moral, that would be it. As hard as it is to believe that authenticity is important in our highly filtered world, internet users crave original content.

❤️ once upon a time ….

♬ Growing up – blondes

In this 2019 study, 90% of the 1,590 adults surveyed said authenticity is important online, but 51% said they believe less than half of brands create works that resonate as authentic.

So whether you’re jumping into a dance trend or showing off your crocheted frogs, stay true to you. It’s the surest way to keep the followers you’ll keep – and hopefully make real money.

Be transparent

This goes hand in hand with authenticity. The rules regarding tagging sponsored content and posting when you get free stuff are pretty vague, but it’s always better to make a mistake with caution.

The TikTok branded content switch adds discovery (#Ad) to you, so use it when needed.

Contact your favorite creators for guidance

If you’re not sure where to start, start moving. Chances are, some of your favorite creators are making money from TikTok. Check out what they do — brand offers, promote t-shirts, write their Venma in alphabet soup — and try to put those same strategies into action.

Don’t discard your regular content

If each of your TikToks is sponsored content or promotes something, your followers will lose interest. You have to play cool.

Makeup artist Bretman Rock announces partnerships with Yves Saint Laurent, but also funny videos, his favorite Filipino food and, of course, makeup and fashion content that has earned all his followers.

Even big brands like Ben & Jerry publish TikToks that present Halloween costumes for their official dogs. Don’t always make money.

Don’t give up

Making money on this social network is not easy. If it was, we would all be Addison Rae. (It’s nice to joke about it — and she herself admits that a lot of people think she doesn’t have a real job. And she does it with the confidence of a 20-year-old who makes $ 5 million a year.)

If you are excluded by a brand or influencer, give it a try. Hard work literally pays off.
