Are you a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air user who likes to watch the battery life of your Mac laptop? Want to see the battery percentage in the MacOS menu bar with Monterey or Big Sur? Let’s see how you can display the battery percentage indicator in the macOS menu bar with the latest operating systems.
The battery percentage indicator is a quick and easy way to determine how long you can use your MacBook before it runs out. Of course, the battery icon itself can be used to determine this, but it only gives a rough estimate, not a more accurate display. After updating to macOS Big Sur or later, the battery percentage will no longer appear in the menu bar by default. We assume that Apple did this to make room for the Control Center and other menu items. If you are one of those users who often rely on this indicator, you can still enable it manually.
How to display the battery percentage in the MacOS menu bar
You can easily re-enable the battery percentage on your Mac using a hidden setting in System Preferences. Just follow the steps below to get started with Big Sur and Monterey:
- Switch to “System Preferences” on your Mac from the Dock.
- This will open a new window on your Mac. Select “Dock & Menu Bar” which is the third option in the menu next to the desktop and screen saver settings.
- Here you will find Control Center items in the left pane. Scroll down to the “Other modules” section.
- In the Other modules section, you will find the battery setting. Click on it and check the box next to “Show percentage”. Also, make sure the “Show in menu bar” option is highlighted.
And now the battery percentage indicator is back in the macOS Monterey or Big Sur menu bar.
From now on, you’ll be able to easily guess how long your MacBook will last on battery before you need to reconnect it to the latest releases of macOS, just as you could in previous versions of macOS including macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.
In addition, if you click on the battery icon in the menu bar, you can access the context menu that displays a more accurate estimate of the remaining battery life. It even shows which app on your Mac also consumes the most battery. Battery settings can also be adjusted from the same menu, if required.
If you happen to be using a much older version of the system software, you can use another method to display the remaining battery life in Mac OS X.

The battery indicator for Mac laptops is undeniably useful, so it’s understandable why many MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air users want to see that percentage all the time, not just a small icon where you have to guess how much battery is left .
