How to create a new Mac user

Even if more people use your Mac, that doesn’t mean you should share everything. Create dedicated users for every person who works with your Mac to help manage files and provide enough privacy for every user who works on your computer.

In this post, we’ll walk you through creating users on your Mac, as well as deleting ones you’ve created but don’t need anymore. Sharing is caring, and sometimes it really makes sense to use just one device and share it with multiple people, so let’s see what types of user accounts you have available in macOS, how to add a new user to your Mac, and what’s in store for you with this experience.

What is the difference between account types?

Before we get into the little things about how to add another user to a Mac, consider a quick look at adding a new account in macOS. There are several types of accounts you can create on your Mac for other users. The default account on your Mac is an administrator account that allows you to add other users.

You can create these types of accounts on a Mac:

  • Administrator
  • Standard
  • Just sharing

You can also create a user group.

These types of accounts have different permissions and, not surprisingly, Administrator has the most comprehensive. The type of administrator account gives you complete control over your device, plus this user can add and manage other users.

Standard the account type can install applications, customize its own settings, but cannot add other users.

Just sharing is a restricted type of account for another person who can access files that you share remotely, but cannot log in or change settings.

And, as mentioned above, you can create and Group on your Mac and add any user from your device to the group.

How to create a new Mac user

Let’s now look at how to create a new user on your Mac.

First open the Apple logo menu at the top left of the screen and click System settings… Then go to Users and groups. There, click on the lock in the lower left corner of the window so you can make changes. Enter the administrator password to continue.

Select the type of new user you are adding from the drop-down menu, add the full user name and adjust the account name as needed, add a password and password entry (the latter is optional), and then click Create a user.

How to delete an account

After you add a user to your Mac, you may need to remove it later. The process is very simple, just like adding a new user. First follow the steps you want to create a new user on your Mac – open up System settings… > Users and groups and click on lock to unlock so you can make changes in this window.

Then enter your administrator password and select the user you want to remove.

Then click on the icon – in the Users and Groups window.
