How to block a website on Chrome

Chrome is by far the most popular search engine in the world, with approximately 90 percent of the internet traffic flowing through it.

However, Google has created relatively few methods to route the Internet through filters or privacy screens on Chrome. Basically, finding a solution to any problem requires expansion.

There are many reasons to block a website, but one of the more common is focus. Often, our productivity is ruined by open access to distracting applications and websites. Whatever they are – social media, other productivity apps – there are times when it’s best to turn off the rest of the world and focus on being productive.

Here we will show you how to block a website on Chrome and present an application that will help you achieve the perfect level of productivity on your Mac.

How to block a website on Chrome with one click

Chrome is its own ecosystem. You can only block sites with an extension within Chrome, but an easier way is to use a third-party app to block all the pages you want. For this we like Focus.

Focus can block websites on Chrome and Safari, which immediately makes it a far better solution than just using the Chrome extension. For Safari fans, the Focus is almost a must-have because there is no alternative.

Start Focus

Focus can control any browser and block any website you want. It comes with some pre-installed options, which you can delete if you wish. You can also create a schedule to block sites; if you want to be incredibly disciplined and focused at work, Focus is a great way to block distractions during working hours, but not when you enjoy your free time.

Make a schedule to block sites

The application is also very customizable. It comes with preloaded quotes that appear when you try to visit a blocked page, but as you can see below, it is possible to add your own!

Custom quotes

When you’re done deciding which websites you want to block, keep in mind that Focus can also restrict access to certain apps on your Mac. Again, all of this is managed by your focus schedule, so you won’t lose access to any of the apps.

List of blocked sites

If there’s one thing to keep in mind, it’s that Focus lives in the menu bar. A 25-minute session is also the default when you start Focus up, although we think it’s best to customize Focus to create a routine schedule. There are also analytical markers that show how much time you have saved with Focus, which gamify the productivity experience.

So you can block a site on Chrome, but that’s definitely not the only way.

How to use Chrome extensions to block websites and social media

As we alluded, blocking a website on Chrome requires an extension. Google Chrome extensions are available through the Web Store. Here’s a step-by-step guide to navigating the Google Web Store and finding a good extension so you can permanently block certain websites on Chrome:

  1. Open a new tab in Chrome or open Chrome.
  2. From the main screen, access the ‘apps’ icon or visit the ‘Web Store’ tab below the Google search bar. You can also go directly to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions

  3. Make sure ‘extensions’ is selected.
  4. Enter ‘block page’ in the search box
Look for the Block sites extension
  5. Select the blocker you want to add. We will go with the ‘Block Site’ for this tutorial. From there, simply select ‘add to Chrome’
    chrome add block site extension
  6. In the pop-up window that follows, click ‘add extension’. You will then need to agree to the Block Site terms in the new window.
  7. Enter the site you want to block and select the ‘plus’ icon
Add Facebook to the block list

You can add as many pages as you want. Just keep in mind that the extension will remember that these are blocked pages on Chrome and will prevent you from accessing them. When you try to visit a page, it will remind you that the page is blocked.

Block adult websites with SafeSearch

Looking for an adult content blocking tool on your child’s personal account, work machine or device? Safe search is the easiest solution. This feature was originally available with Google Search and acts as a filter that hides explicit content on the web. Here’s how to enable it:

  1. Go to www.google.com and click Settings in the lower right corner
  2. Click Search Settings
  3. Select ‘Enable SafeSearch’

block secure site search

Please note that SafeSearch will hide adult content from Google search results, but you will still be able to access it directly by visiting websites with such content. Therefore, if you want to prevent children from visiting certain websites, it is better to use screen time limits.

How to limit a website on Chrome using screen time

Your Mac has a wonderful screen time setting available in System Preferences, which can help you control device usage as well as block certain websites you don’t want to visit yourself or want to restrict for your kids. Here’s how to block sites using Screen Time:

  1. Go to the Apple menu> System Settings
  2. Click Screen Time> Content and Privacy
  3. Turn on Privacy Restrictions
  4. Select ‘Restrict Adult Websites’ under Web Content.
limit the time of using the website

If you want to list specific sites under restricted content, click Customize under Web Content and add site addresses by clicking the plus button.

Ban sites in incognito mode

Private browsing, known to many as anonymous mode, has been popular for many years – mainly because it leaves no trace of your search activity. This is a great way to prevent certain ads and websites from targeting you on the web. If that’s your goal, great!

Safari was the first major search engine to introduce Incognito. You can enable it through the Safari menu> File> New private window. Similarly, enable incognito mode in Chrome: Chrome menu> File> New incognito window.

If you want to restrict access to certain sites in incognito mode, use Focus or Screen Time to manually block them.

How to unblock websites on Chrome

If you use Focus to manually block websites and social media, all you need to do is remove those pages from your Blocked list. You will find it in Preferences> Blocking. A similar approach works with most Chrome extensions – you just need to find a list of blocked sites and edit it.

But what if you can’t find a site on any “blocked” list, and it won’t open in Chrome? Chances are good that you’re dealing with geo-blocking – limited access to certain sites based on your geographic location. Fortunately, you can work around geo-constraints with ClearVPN.

ClearVPN is a personalized VPN client that automatically connects you to the best servers, depending on what you want to do – it has shortcuts for tasks such as playing games, regional Netflix, etc. If you can’t access a particular website, try changing your location to ClearVPN. This should solve the problem of geoblocking.

How to block websites on a Chrome mobile device

Apple’s original screen time is available on iOS and can be a great tool for blocking web pages on a mobile device:

  1. Go to Settings> Screen Time
  2. Go to Content and privacy restrictions and select Content restrictions
  3. Select Restrict Adult Websites under Web Content
  4. Tap Add site and add the web addresses of the sites you want to block.

If you’re seriously annoyed by online ads and all kinds of pop-ups that distract you on your mobile device, it makes a lot of sense to get an ad tracking tool. AdGuard is an amazing app for Mac and iPhone, which can ban all kinds of interference on the web. It even lets you block in-app ads!

You can block websites for any reason you want. Extensions are fine, but remember that adding a lot of extensions to Chrome will end up degrading your Mac’s performance. Chrome is rich in resources anyway, so adding more to its mix is a cautious path to go.

That is why we prefer Focus. A standalone application, Focus does much more than any extension. It helps you manage schedules, provides insight into how much time you save, and – our favorite – can block distracting apps. Sorry, but your mid-day games may end!

Best of all, Focus, ClearVPN and AdGuard are free as part of a seven-day trial of Setapp, the world’s best app suite for your Mac and iPhone. In addition to the Focus, you get instant and unlimited access to a host of other great tools for almost any use case. When your one-week trial period ends, Setapp is only $ 9.99 per month.
