What does “link in bio” mean?
The creators on Instagram and TikTok use the term “link in the biography” to tell their audience that they can get more information related to the publication by clicking on the URL in their biography.
Anyone can add a link to their resume on Instagram, and any business account owner can add one to their TikTok. When they arrive, the creators draw attention to the link by mentioning it in the content they post.
‘Link in bio’ is the only way Instagram and TikTok creators with less than 10,000 followers can send people off the platform. Accounts with more than 10,000 followers are allowed to add links to their stories.
Most creators use their Instagram and TikTok bio link to send viewers to one of six things:
- Their website
- Their other social media profiles
- For the blog
- Product page
- Internet shop
… or all of the above (more on that later).
Where is the link in the biography on Instagram?
On Instagram, you’ll find a link in your resume in a short description at the very top of your user profile. It is below other important data, such as the number of posts and the number of followers.
Venture North, an organization that promotes tourism in northern Scotland, uses its link in the biography to direct its audience to its website.
Where is the connection in the biography on TikTok?
To simplify things, the link was in exactly the same place on TikTok. It can be found inside the biography at the very top of the creator’s page.

How to add a link to a bio with multiple links
The problem with the function of connecting on Instagram and TikTok is that you can only have one. You can’t place links anywhere else on these platforms, so you have to be cunning to optimize your one chance.
For most creators, this means converting a single link into multiple links using a landing page.
Simply create a landing page that contains all the links you want to display and add a link to that landing page to your Instagram or TickTok biography.
And if that starts to sound a little complicated. Don’t worry, there are many tools that can help you easily create a landing page with multiple links.

5 Link in bio tips to increase traffic to your website
Highlight your most important connections
Less is more when it comes to landing pages with multiple links. Resist the urge to turn every connection under the sun. The last thing you want is to distract people from the important.
The good things you need to point out on your link on the bio landing page are:
- The home page of your website
- Your latest or most popular content
- Information about sales, promotions or donations
- Links to your other social media accounts
- Your online store or top product site
- Your lead magnet with the best performance
Align your connections with your goals
Which links you choose to include in your link on the bio landing page will depend on what you want to achieve.
If you want to compile your email list, you could skip other social media account links, but put your lead magnet and sign up for the list in front and in the middle.
On the other hand, if you’re on Instagram or TikTok to increase sales, you’ll want to focus on your online store and the latest sale or sweepstakes.
The value of the offer, not the hard sale
Someone who followed a request to link in a biography from Instagram or TikTok has probably just started with your content. That’s why it’s best to avoid heavy sales on your landing page.
Instead, focus on offering value. For example, you can:
- Offer exclusive offers or discounts for people who shop through your landing page
- Link to your most read or useful content
- Include a good introduction to you or your brand
Keep your link in the bio link short
Both Instagram and TickTok display your full URL in your resume. So you want it to be something short and powerful.
Some links in bio tools allow you to customize your URL. If you can, you should!
You can use this space to mention your brand name and include a call to action. For example:
Custom links are influential, easy to remember, and likely to inspire clicks.
Don’t worry if you can’t create a short URL at the source. You can use a URL shortening tool like ow.ly, available from the Hootsuite dashboard, to create ultra-fast links.
Use emoticons to highlight your “biography” link in the post
Once you have a super sleek link on your bio landing page, you’ll want to go the extra mile to drive traffic to your profile. One way to do this is to use emojis to draw attention to your connection in the bio CTA.
Still, you don’t have to go to full generation Z. One or two well-placed emoticons are all it takes.
Drive traffic to your Instagram website with Hootsuite and manage the rest of your social profiles in one place. From one dashboard, you can schedule and post, hire your followers, track relevant conversations, measure results, manage ads, and more.
