Fortnies and universal monsters cross over for short films

You wouldn’t think that Fortnite it would be the place to go if you want to see hot millennial versions of the classics Universal Monsters, but anything is possible in 2021. For the holiday season, the popular battle royale is holding a festival called “Shortnitemares” with a short miniseries called “We Will Be Monsters” that will try what Dark Universe failed to make and modernize these classic monsters for a new audience.

The setting is such that Frankenstein’s bride will wander all over the world and save monsters like Mummy and Dracula from a premature end. From there … who knows, maybe Jekyll will be the greatest evil. Direction: Rick Famuyiwa from Mandalorac (and one of several ex-helmers of the Flash film), first episode has already entered Fortnite, and here it is a trailer that gives a brief insight into what to expect. The remaining three short films will appear in early 2022.

It all sounds extremely funny, but it might be fun to watch these YA versions of the characters use their supernatural powers and throw out verses. Either way, the technology behind it is certainly impressive: Epic’s tool for Metahuman creators was used to bring characters to life in photorealistic life, and the entire project was done in collaboration with animation vendor Plastic Wax using the Unreal engine. In the video below, Wax founder Nathan Maddams and Universal character designer enter into a series — which he describes as a mix of robbery and Brother Shaw movies, for you martial arts lovers.

Deciding on the look of the series was done in parallel with the project’s time frame of eight months, and he admitted that Metahuman accelerated the visualization process fairly quickly. As a character designer for Universal, Mark McCreery discovered that he was able to achieve the final look of character design within a day. “I’m used to digital tools that improve the game,” McCreery said, “but using the Unreal engine has taken it all to a level I haven’t experienced before.”

As silly as it sounds, Frankenstein’s bride, who appeared in the original film for only three minutes, is also on short films. McCreery considered short films as the perfect opportunity to explore her because films couldn’t do that, since try the movie about her now in a kind of limbo. “Making her a hero and a boost for this whole adventure and empowering her was so appropriate,” he said. The entire video mainly serves as a selling point for Unreal and Metahumans in particular, and will surely interest those interested in technology or animation. Who knows if the shorts themselves will end up being something more than a sweet nuisance, but at the very least, it’s a solid showcase for Epic’s technology that will soon adorn consoles and PC games for the next few years.
