Eidos joins game developers by pushing time against the crisis. The studio owned by Square Enix has announced that its locations in Quebec (Montreal and Sherbrooke) will switch to a four-day work week Monday through Thursday sometime in the “next few weeks”. He hopes, as you might expect, to improve the quality of his working hours. Eidos therefore encourages teams to redefine working conditions and improve efficiency, for example by shortening meeting times. The company has already implemented some changes in the quality of life during the pandemic, such as rest periods and reimbursement of mental and physical health costs — this is supposedly a logical extension of that strategy.
Eidos is not the first studio to adopt a four-day week. Bugsnax developer Young Horses changed that in September. It is very rare for a large studio to make this move, and it could provoke similar moves by other developers if the strategy proves successful.
However, “if” is an operational expression. Eidos wanted to recount past tests with shortened working weeks, like the Icelandic civil service, but it is not yet clear whether this translates to the gaming industry. Developers are notorious for rushing into making holidays, even if it leads to extreme mistakes. Eidos will have to make a difficult choice: does it stick to a four-day schedule and risk postponing games, or does it require extra hours to make sure the title is ready? This shortened week could pay off for happier developers, but it could also cause problems if teams need months to complete projects.
