DuckDuckGo is developing a dedicated privacy-focused web browser for macOS

DuckDuckGo is best known for being an alternative to Google’s privacy in the search industry. The company now, however, wants to expand beyond the search industry with a new privacy-focused desktop browser. Go below for all the details.

The new DuckDuckGo privacy-focused web browser was unveiled as part of the company’s efforts to create a “super privacy app” in CEO Gabriel Weinberg’s blog post. The desktop browser will be similar to the DuckDuckGo app for iPhone and iPad, allowing users to easily control their privacy settings and their information.

Weinberg says the app will waive “complicated settings” and “deceptive alerts” in favor of “robust privacy protection that works by default, in search, browse, email, and more.”

Significantly, the company also says not forking Chromium for this new browser, but a browser based on rendering machines provided by the OS. Here’s something that will make the app faster and cleaner:

Instead of forcing Chromium or anything else, we build our desktop application around rendering mechanisms provided by the OS (as on a mobile device), which allows us to remove a lot of unnecessary clutter and clutter that has accumulated over the years in major browsers. With our clean and simple interface combined with your favorite Fire Button from our mobile app, DuckDuckGo for desktop will be ready to become your new daily search app. Compared to Chrome, the DuckDuckGo desktop app is cleaner, much more private, and early tests found it much faster!

“It’s a daily browsing app that respects your privacy because it’s never a bad time to stop companies from spying on your search and browsing history,” concludes DuckDuck’s CEO.

According to The Verge, DuckDuckGo desktop browser is currently in private testing for macOS, but the company is also working on a version for Windows. The specific release date is not clear, but we would expect it in 2022 at the earliest.
